Stephanie Moravek GLEN GARDNER Program helps special needs girls The Educational Services Commission has announced a new program called "Hoop Able." This is an opportunity for girls between the ages of 10 and 18 who have been identified by their school district as having special needs to learn the basics of basketball.

Classes are scheduled for Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through July 9 at Voorhees High School, Route 513. Participants will receive individual attention. According to ESC Sandhill School Director Dale Sansky, "the girls will be taught the fundamentals of basketball in a supported environment.

Stephanie Moravek CENTRAL JERSEY Rutgers hosting mini-convention There will be a free mini-convention Saturday for scientists, researchers, inventors and the public to explore "Challenges and Opportunities in the Postge-nomic Era." The convention is sponsored by Rutgers' College of Pharmacy and will address current and future research in the biotechnology arena.

Presentations on topics such as genomics, drug discovery, pharmacogenomics, toxi-cogenomics and "gene chip" technology will be made by scientists and researchers from Philadelphia-based Glaxo. Smithkline Pharmaceuticals and Wyeth-Ayerst Research. A panel discussion will follow each lecture. The event will take place from 1 to 5:30 p.m., Room 115 of William Levine Hall, Rutgers' College of Pharmacy, 160 Frel-inghuysen Road, Busch Campus, Piscataway. Gina Monari Dedication slated at air force base The New Jersey Air National Guard will commemorate the history, accomplishments and traditions of the Guard with the dedication of the Heritage Center on McGuire Air Force Base.

The Heritage Center was established by retired and current members of the New Jersey Air National Guard. The Center will have artifacts, photographs, reference materials, a media center and aircraft missile and an F-84F "Thunderstreak" airplane. SOMERSET COUNTY Raritan group assists SHIP One of the initiatives of The Jointure, the Raritan-based nonprofit group that administers pre-school, before-school and after-school programs in Somerset and Middlesex counties, began shortly after a May 18 sewerage backup in the offices of SHIP destroyed all supplies, food, clothing and toys for that agency. SHIP offices, under the direction of Tom O'Leary, works with the area homeless and hungry population. Officials of The Jointure made the decision to ask the approximately 700 youngsters signed up for its school programs to donate food and supplies to help SHIP recover.

June 14 is the last day of the SHIP drive. Anyone may make a donation to the drive. To find out how, call The Jointure at (908) 722-0233.
