The Daily Inter Lake 4 SUNDAY JANUARY 16 1955 Deficit Pleases It looks like Monday will be a sad day for the Republicans That's the day President Eisenhower must send his third unbalanced budget to a Congress now controlled by Demo crats who will seek to make the most of the situation The Republicans arc pledged to the twin goals of reducing taxes and bal ancing the budget but such a happy Situation is well nigh impossible to at tain According to advance estimates this fiscal 1956 budget for the year be ginning July 1 1955 will project a gap between income and outgo of some $3 billion The continuing deficit pleases no one to be sure But for the Republicans the fiscal pledges of 1952 could become the twin horns of a serious political dilem ma in 1956 if balance is not achieved by then No One The Eisenhower administration has made tremendous strides in achieving balance Substantial cuts have been made both in taxes and expenditures since the GOP took over the White House in 1953 In fact many of tle spending cuts made in 1953 and 1954 were attacked as excessive by the Dem ocrats whose criticism promises to be more effective now that they control Capitol Hill Rut despite the efforts of the Presi dent and officials balance continues to elude the arministration As the Presi dent said in his State of the Union mes sage he is about further tax cuts but is now clear that defense and other essential govern ment costs must remain at a level pre cluding further tax reduction this Support for Parks Residents of the lathead area will probably be surprised to learn that the national park service estimates that more than 50000000 people will visit the national parks in 1955 ifty million people is quite a few in any language Undoubtedly a large percentage of those visitors will plan to spend some time in Glacier or Yellowstone National Parks and every effort should be made to convince oth ers that their itinerary should include those parks Attractions which draw so many people are obviously great national assets Yet these parks are being al lowed to deteriorate rapidly Speaking Letters to the A unique and powerful voice in American newspapers is the popular to the section carried by most daily and weekly newspapers A vehicle for expression of opinion of the millions of newspaper readers the letters to the editor column can be a potent force in development of a com munity and the maintenance of high standards of impartial journalism by newspapers offering such services The Daily Inter Lake offers space on its editorial page to readers who wish to express an opinion on any local State national or international matter Barbs in Pittsburgh the director of the Na tional Park Service Conrad Wirth said that many roads trails parking areas and other facilities have de teriorated in the 175 parks memorials and monuments in the system This comes close to being official support to conservationists that the national parks are going to ruin There is no economy whatever in current that pile up bigger repair bills for highways and facilities in the parks in the future While Con gress is in session there ought to be careful consideration given to ways to prevent further deterioration of these parks and their facilities Editor or on any other subject that has some bearing on the lives of all of us as resi dents of the lathead and the nation We ask only that letters be signed b' the sender and that content be limited to nearly 300 words Unsigned letters cannot be published but if a contrib utor desires his or her name will be withheld from publication It is imper ative however that the name of the sender be known We urge readers to take advantageof the department of your Daily Inter Lake Much good comes of the varied expressions of opinion of thinking readers Q's and A's fe IS 11 Your Guest?
