16A- Columbus Telegram Columbus, Nebraska Thursday, December 1, 1977 Osceola looking for better record OSCEOLA-Dave Bowman begins his second year as Osceola's head basketball coach Friday at East Butler. Bowman should direct the Bulldogs to a better record than last year's 3-13 mark. The reasons for such op- timism are three's. There are three returning starters, three other returning lettermen, three other senior players and Mike Vcelik's three strength's. They are his good jumping ability, his good jump shot and his good age (only a junior.) The best player on the team is probably Derald Johnson, 6- 2 junior forward.

Bowman describes him as an excellent shooter and jumper. He started last year and averaged 11 points a game. Starting beside him at for- ward was Todd Hiemer, 6-0 senior, with a 5.3 scoring average. The other returning starter, 6-1 Lyndon Wieseman, a forward-center, is injured. Three senior lettermen are making their bids for open spots on the starting five.

They are Scot Sipes, 6-3 cenler. Russell Miller, 6-2 forward-center, and 5-10 Neal Koehrs, a good outside shooter. Although he did not letter last season, 5-11 junior Mike Vcelik is listed as one of the top players by Bowman. Jan. 16-20 is marked on the calendar to indicate Osceola's only tournament this year, the Goldenrod Conference at By Bulldogs Hard to match last mat season OSCEOLA--The defending wrestling champions lost six seniors to graduation and a two-year letterman who moved.

But Osceola still has six returning starters and several good wrestlers from the junior varsity of last year. Jon Habben directed the Bulldogs to a perfect 104 dual record and 5-0 mark in the league. He is beginning his fifth year as head wrestling coach at Osceola after OSCEOLA BASKETBALL VETS, from left, Neal Roehrs, Lyndon Wieseman, Scot Sipes, Russell Miller, Todd Hiemer. Derald Johnson, Genoa. While upsets may happen, Bowman sees powerful Fullerton as a cinch champ in the East Division of the league.

He predicts Genoa, Stromsburg and Osceola to fight for second, third and fourth while putting Cedar Rapids in last place. Bowman said, "Offensively we will be fairly solid with several players capable of double figure averages. His two outstanding wrestlers this year are Ray Johnson and Tracy Day. Johnson is a senior who has been a state contender the past two years in the 98 pound class.

This year he will compete at 10S. Day was a state qualifier at 126 last year but this year the junior wUl be in the 132-pound class. The four other returning starters are heavyweight Eric Henderson; junior Duane Tonniges, 167; sophomore Tim Bachenberg, 98; and 119- pound sophomore Corky Cliffords. Habben's outlook for the season is: "We don't have the overall strength we had last year since we graduated six and a senior two-year let- terman moved. Overcoming possible forfeits could be a problem.

Some good wrestlers will be coming on to the varsity for the first time, hopefully adding some balance to our returning six starters." a highlight the season. On Jan. 6 and 7, the Bulldogs will wrestle at the Clarks Invitational. The Stromsburg Invitational Jan. 14 the next meet.
