The Times POLICE NEWS 2 held in assault with car on officer Two men are cooling their heels in the Shreveport City Jail, after allegedly trying to run over an off-duty Shreveport police officer early Sunday morning. According to police reports, Cpl.

Calvin Abram and Officer Alan Crump, working as guards at the Whataburger Restaurant in the 4000 block of Jewella Road, heard gunshots coming from a nearby pawnshop just before 3 a.m. As they ran to the scene to investigate, a car sped from the parking lot and attempted to run over Abram, reports said. The officers fired at the car, which sped away, but was stopped after a short chase by other officers. Arrested and charged with attempted first-degree homicide were Andre Moore, 19, and Tar-rance Whitlock, 22, both of the 1400 block of Glen Avenue. They were in the Shreveport City Jail late Sunday, with no bond yet set.

Careless driver sought following fatal crash Shreveport police are looking for a motorist whose careless driving caused another car to wreck, killing its driver early Sunday. Police said the victim, 33 year-old Delores Black Lowery, no address available, was southbound on Jewella Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when a two-tone green, late-model Chevy passed her and came over into her lane, forcing her to swerve to avoid a collision. That forced Lowery's car right into a light pole at Hardy Street. Lowery was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The other car involved did not stop, but instead sped away. Police did not have any further information about the car or its occupants. Louisiana state police said Wilson's vehicle, a two-door 1991 Cadillac, was eastbound at a high rate of speed when it left the road, struck several small trees, caromed back onto the highway and tumbled several times. The car traveled more than 450 feet after first leaving the macadam. Troopers said Wilson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was dead at the scene.

Investigation into whether alcohol played a part in the wreck continues. But until the costs of sending juvenile offenders to other parishes exceeds that $450,300 a year, governing bodies aren't, going to fund the facility here.

However, many officials say that the problems of finding space in other parishes and transferring juveniles back and forth mean that juveniles who probably should be locked up remain free. "If violent juvenile crime continues, the public may demand a local facility," Wattigny said. The task force also is looking at such programs as Families in Need of Services, which seeks to get the family involved before a prphlem child becomes a delin--jjuent, Wattigny said. You see, one of the strange things that happened during his tenure as wing commander involved complaints from people along the base's flight path that whenever base planes flew over, their garage doors would close and lock of their own accord. That can cause problems if your car happens to be under the door or if that's the door you left open when you dashed to the store.
