Walk Thursday, March 29, 1979' General News ute Paid Hines, Rapides' First Black Assistant DA By George Sigler Town Talk Staff Writer today's leaders "are standing on the shoulders of men like Eddie Hines," according to the Rev. Roger D. Lathan, pastor of Newman United Methodist Church. That was the consensus of testimonials delivered Wednesday night at a program in Alexandria Convention Hall organized "just to say, Eddie, we love you," the Rev. C.J.

Bell explained. Eddie is Alexandria civic leader J. Edward Hines the first black assistant district attorney in Rapides Parish. Hundreds of well-wishers, including Gov. Edwin Edwards, honored Hines' religious, professional and civic contributions and achievements.

Bell, program chairman, called Hines "a doer" with "that special brand of courage." Alexandria attorney Edward Larvadain called Hines a "trailblazer" in whose footsteps the parish's black attorneys "are all proud to be following." Edwards' speech highlighted the event as he began by joking, "I didn't know Eddie Hines was I thought he was a Chinaman." He said he and Hines had much in common as each came from humble backgrounds and "had to take some drastic steps" during the course of their careers. Edwards praised Hines! courage and leadership in helping blacks secure voting rights saying, "Voting power is what makes the difference in the United States of America." In his speech, Hines asked, "What can a man say in light of this demonstration?" After thanking the program's organizers, Hines said, "Above all, I am grateful for the blessings that God has bestowed upon me." Among other speakers were Mayor Carroll Lanier, District Judge Robert P. Jackson, District Attorney Edwin 0. Ware and Vermont Burris of the Rapides Parish Voters League. Attorney Louis A.

Berry was master of ceremonies. Testimonial Draws Politicians Wednesday night's testimonial program honoring J. Edward Hines Jr. attracted political candidates the way a picnic draws ants. In addition to Gov.

Edwin Edwards, the guest list included Sandra S. Thompson, and Ben Jeff-crs, candidates for secretary of state; and Bob Odom, candidate for commissioner of agriculture. Rapides Parish Police Juror John Chrislophe introduced them as well as dozens of local candidates and officeholders, during a special segment of the program. But one candidate was passed over, and he's not happy about it. Clyde Vidrine, former aide to Gov.

Edwin Edwards, candidate for lieutenant governor and author of "Just Takin' Orders," a book alleging misconduct by Edwards, was" never acknowledged. Being ignored was "in very, very poor taste," Vidrine said. "Every other statewide candidate was introduced," he said. Vidrine said he asked program organizers if any problems would be created if he attended because Edwards, who. has called Vidrine "a mentally ill alcohlic," was guest speaker.

He said they assured him there would be no problems and encouraged him to attend. Gov. Edwin Edwards motions toward Assistant District Attorney J. Ed-, program honoring Hines Wednesday night. (Town Talk Photo by Lcandro ward Hines Jr.
