The five-member team arrived Thursday to spend three days touring the Straits of Mackinac, the only Great Lakes site being considered for the museum. About 20 lighthouses that once focuses on the lighthouses, including the slogan, "We'll leave the lighthouse on for you." In Mackinaw City, residents are eager to win the museum, which could bring in about $20.7 million a year in tourist dollars. Residents wore T-shirts and buttons supporting the museum.

Members of the committee have already visited contenders in Staten Island, N.Y.; Point Judith, R.I., and Hull, Mass. Judges also may visit New London, and Rockland, Maine. The committee plans to vote on the museum's site on July 11. The museum is scheduled to open on July 4,2001. guided mariners to safety are ithin a 20-mile radius of the suggested museum.

Cullen Chambers, 'a lighthouse preservation consultant from Georgia, was among those climbing the rickety spiral stairs of the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse on Friday. "It's an excellent view. There are exciting possibilities. It's one of the prettiest sites I've seen so far," he said. Gov.

John Engler is expected to offer $1.5 million toward the construction of the $20 million museum. On Friday, Gov. Engler announced plans to bring some lighthouses into the state park sys tem, using money from the Natural Resources Trust Fund to allow the state to buy and maintain the structures. Some selection committee members said they were surprised to learn that Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state. "People don't think that Michigan has lighthouses," said Valerie Nelson, who heads the Massachusetts-based national Lighthouse Preservation Society.

"But we're really getting a sense of how important lighthouses are to Michigan." Travel Michigan director Richard Czuba calls lighthouses "the icons of Michigan." Port Huron Drawing by STEVE TAYLOR A look at the William Nottingham, a 376-foot, steel-hulled freighter that was nearly a casualty of the great storm of 1913: THE STORM: The freighter was laden with 200,000 bushels of wheat and barley on its way from Fort Williams to Buffalo, N.Y., when the storm caught it in the middle of Lake Superior on Nov. 8. The crew battled the gale all day and into the next, but failed to bring the ship close to any kind of shelter. After battling the storm for 48 hours, the ship's fuel was gone. DARING DECISION: Capt.

Peter Fuller decided to burn the grain that the vessel was hauling. AGROUND: The ship almost made it to safety. It was slowly heading around Whitefish Point and approaching St. Ste. Marie when it went aground on Parisian Island Reef.

FATALITIES: Three crew members were drowned when they launched a boat to try to get help. The boat capsized and all three men were lost. AFTERMATH: The Nottingham was salvaged that fall and towed to Toledo, Ohio, for repair. FATE: The Nottingham remained afloat to serve as a cargo transport on the North Atlantic during World War II, then was scrapped at Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946.
