The Late Gen. Jo.

Bell. In the death of General Joseph Bell. one of the landmarks of Jsckson has been lemoved. He died on Tuesday last at his residence near this city and was buried near a tree which he had planted, and in accordance with a wish he bad sev eral times expressed. He was a widely known citizen, especially in connection with land matters.

In early life, he was a minister of tbe Cumberland Presby terian Church. In 1842 be represented Noxubee and Winston counties in tbe 8tate Senate. In 1852 he was elected Secretary of State, and on the resigna tion of Uorernor Quitman be convened the Senate in order that a successor might be duly qualified, and it was then he adopted an expression that he often afterwards used, "the country is safe." He was genial, kind-hearted, and, when be had the means, was liberal and gener ous. We gratefully remember a noble contribution that be made when we called upon him to help the Orphans' Home at Lauderdale. Others gave theirfi ves and lens, but Gen.

Joseph Bell signed hit name to a check for fifty dollars. May the sod rest lightly o'er his place of rest. Clarion. Vnm tam win. -Chairman of tUa Committee on Appropriations of the House nf Representatives, Mr.

Randall has done all that a atrong and honest man mb do to keen tba expenditures of the Government within proper bounds. It has fallen to him, more than to any other Democrat, to meet the demaud arhlok thanannla rtwiate.t-ed at the Dolla ia November, 1882, after the Forty-sev enth Congress tbe iiouee or. xtoDeson and Keifer had stirred the country to iiuHmatiAn hv it defiant BTOflinCV. Some members of tbe majority in the last Congress apparently rorgot wny hev wen gent there: Mr. Randall has not at any time, for a single day or hour, lost sight of tbe special mission of tbe majority returned at the tidal wave election.

Other good Democrats have stood by economy and retrenchment, but it is depriving these gentlemen of no part of tbe great credit due them to say that the wisdom, firmness, experience and unyielding integrity of Mr. Randall have made him the chief representative in the Forty-eighth House of the honest policy of reform which brought the Democrats back to power, and wliich alone can keep them in power.
