CARD PARTY Oct. 2 4 8 p.m. Fire Hall, Shepherdslou-n Adoption of an amendment, appointment of a nominating committee and a speaker from the history department of Mercersburg Academy highlight ed meeting Thursday of (he Ilagerstown Civil War Round table at Halfway Fire Hall.

The group adopted an amendment to admit junior members between (he ages of 13 and 18 Until issuance of the Eman cipation Proclamation in October 18G2 slavery was not the primary issue of the war. Kittridge pointed out that the English press was pro-Southern and England knew that a split in the United States would give (hat country a chance to gain a foothold in the country which to the organization. Persons of it wanted to control. that age bracket or others interested in joining should contact Dr. Edward Vail, presi dent.

During the meeting Dr. Vai' appointed a nominating com mittee composed of a Gabe, chairman; Hilton Ben nett, Winlon Taylor and Robert Brown. The speaker for the evening, Henry Kittridge. history pro fessor from Mcrcerslmrg Academy chose "American Foreign Policy in the Civil War" as his topic. He explained that Iho biggest chance for foreign iccognilion of the South came from England and France where the aristocracy sympathized with the Southern viewpoint.

England did recognize Confederacy as a belligerent as token recognition, and i drew even this support toward the end of the war when it cut off its supply to the South oi English sailing vessels. Other reasons Kittridge noted for European nations i holding recognition from I Soulh were an excessive supply of cotton; the need for a i from the north and the moral issue of slavery. The vignette for the evening's meeting was given by Frye and George Snyder on (he capture of the Fairview Mountain signal tower.
