On the average, viewers in more than 17.6 million homes watched ABC's Olympics telecasts each night last week, about 800,000 more homes than tuned in for ABC's opening week of nightly Olympics broadcasts. The most-watched Olympics telecast at night was last Tuesday, according to Nielsen estimates. An estimated 19 million homes, about 52 per cent of the national audience, watched that night. The lowest-rated evening Olympics broadcast during the two-week period came last Sunday night, when coverage of the dosing Olympic ceremonies were seen in just over 13.2 million homes.

That broadcast still wound up as the nation's seventh highest-rated evening program in the week ending Aug. 1, according to the ratings. ABC's only non-Olympics evening program last week, a Sunday repeat of a John Denver music special, was rated the nation's 14th most-popular evening show. It was seen in 10.3 million homes. On the average, ABC's evening broadcasts were seen in more than 18 million homes, compared with about 8.1 million homes for CBS shows and 7 million for NBC.

According to Nielsen figures, the 20 most-popular evening shows last week were, in order, as follows: The Tuesday, Thursday, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Friday and Sunday night Olympic telecasts on ABC; "NBC Sunday Mystery "All in the Family," "Hawaii FWeO," "Kojak" and "Barnaby Jones" aH CBS); "Ellery Queen" (NBC); "John Denver Special" (ABC); "M-A-S-H," "Switch," "Maude," "Cannon," "Blue Knight" and "Side by Side" (all CBS).
