Daily Journal, Uklah, Calif. Sunday, November 26, 1978 Bodies of Temple members flood Dover AFB mortuary By MARY ELLEN HASKETT DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (UPI) The bodies from the mass suicides at the Peoples Temple commune in Guyana kept coming into this way station for the dead Saturday, and their increasing numbers forced some bodies to be doubled up in aluminum coffins. Two shipments of the dead arrived Saturday, one with 110 bodies and another with 197. A final shipment of 183 bodies was expected to arrive about 3 a.m.

Sunday, bringing the total number of suicide victims returned to the United States to 912 in nine shipments on C-141 cargo planes that began Thursday. In Georgetown, Guyana, a US source said the total number of victims of the mass suicide aTthe cult's jungle enclave in Jonestown, Guyana, reached 910. The State Department said such figures could change and a renewed search for additional victims would be made at the commune after sunup Sunday. was originally believed that about 400 cult adherents had committed suicide last Saturday, but that count more than doubled late in the week with the discovery of hundreds more bodies under those originally counted. As a result, not enough aluminum "tranfer boxes" for the dead were sent to Guyana, and in the eighth shipment that arrived in Dover Saturday, the 197 bodies were doubled up in 87 boxes.

Most of the bodies, encased in green vinyl bags inside the caskets, were kept in a chilly warehouse adjacent in the air strip, but 211 have been removed from the aluminum "transfer boxes' and placed side by side in eight relngeraled trucks parked behind the Dover AKB mortuary the largest such laeiluy on the east coast. Major Brigham Shuler said 202 bodies have been fingerprinted by a team of FBI fingerprint experts, civilian and military morticians, and other military personnel Five have been embalmed, he said. Only the body of Jones, leader of the sect members, whose belief Jones' doctrines ended in a ritual mav; suicide, has been positively identified. Shuler said No bodies have been claimed Only lour people, two from Philadelphia and two from Dover, have arrived looking for possible relatives among the victims. "There's no point in relatives coming liecau.se there's nothing they can see and nothing they' can claim," Shuler said As the number of bodies to reach Dover from Guyana continued to increase.

Shuler said the cargo planes would load the caskets in stacks of four msicad of three to speed their return to the Tinted States The bodies of children were placed two to a casket. Shuler said (he mortuary team working around the clock amid the steiuli ol decomposing, bloated bodies lias asked for more morticians from Ft. Lee, and the Air Force mortuary office in Washington, DC. to aid in the fingerprinting and embalming. The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology already has sent help.

Shuler said no autopsies will be performed at the base mortuary. Earlier, State Department officials said no autopsy would be performed by the govenment on Jones. The mortuary is a low white building located next to the base hobby shop. The mortuary team has the grim task of removing the bodies from their vinyl bags and making fingerprints sometimes by removing the skin from the victims' fingers, slipping it on their own gloved hands, inking it and pressing it on to cards. After fingerprinting, the bodies are returned to the refrigerator van until they can be embalmed and placed in metal coffins.

One of 60 volunteers' involved in washing the transfer cases and helping at the mortuary, Airman Patricia Goad, said, "I thought it was important to do. I've never done anything like this before." She said she and her fellow volunteers talk among themselves trying to understand why the cult members committed suicide. "My other friends, I try to tell them about it, but you have to be there," the 19-year-old Aiken, SC. native said "Some of it is not very pleasant and the (transfer cases) are heavy," Miss Goad said "When you see them all lined up there, it kind of shocks you." Evidence found during LA raid could link cultists to extortion attempt LOS ANGELES (UPI) The district attorney's office said Saturday it found evidence during a raid that could link the late Rev. Jim Jones and members of his Peoples Temple in Los Angeles to an extortion attempt. Tom McDonald, assistant to district attorney John Van de Kamp, said investigators Friday night raided the real estate office of Enola M.

Nelson, sister to James Nelson McElvane, who was described as the head of the Los Angeles branch of the cult. McDonald said items listed in a search warrant were seized, but he would not disclose what they were. He said an escrow service office in Inglewood, also was raided, but no evidence was found. However, a police spokesman said a package with exposed wire, which appeared to be a simulated bomb, was found in the real estate office. The case stems from a complaint, and later a civil suit, filed by Wade Medlock, 72, and his wife, Mabel, 71.

The couple, former members of the temple in Los Angeles, said Jones threatened and coerced them into selling their home and another piece of property and giving him the money. They said they met with "high members" of the temple, including Jones. McElvan and Mrs Nelson, in February 1977 and Jones then told the couple they would have to sell their home or "they would die The couple said because of the threat, they listed their property a four-unit rental properly in Los Angeles and a home in Baldwin Hills with Enola Nelson Realty Three months later, they said. and several other temple members met with them again and forced them to sign escrow instructions turning over the proceeds of the sale to the temple The district atorney 's office has been investigating the extortion allegations for six months, McDonald said Temple massacre survivors still in Guyana CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (UII) The State Department said Saturday the survivors of the mass suicide at the Peoples Temple commune in Jonestown, Guyana, will not arrive in Charleston before Monday.

Asked what was holding up the move, a State Department spokesman said, "The one thing that has not occurred is the government of Guyana has not given a release to these He did not elaborate. The exact number making the flight was not disclosed, but officials earlier listed 39 as "survivors" and said 45 others were under house arrest at the People's Temple headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana, "Once they get the OK of Guyanese government, they (the will go to South Carolina.
