Vanderbilt MICHAEL PLUNKETT Inquirer Suburban Staff Brandon Costner, son of Overbrook High and St. Joseph's star Tony Costner, will play tomorrow in the McDonald's All-American Game, 25 years after his father was not selected for the team. The father, Tony, was slighted by all-star selectors. Son Brandon would not be denied. By Marc Narducci INQUIRER STAFF WRITER SOUTH BEND, Ind.

Tony Costner was a basketball standout in Philadelphia, first as a member of powerhouse Over-brook High teams and then as a four-year starter at St. Joseph's University. Whether it was winning the city championship at Overbrook in 1979 and 1980, earning Parade magazine all-American honors as a high school senior, going 68-1 those final two years, or helping St. Joseph's defeat DePaul in a stunning NCAA tournament victory as a freshman in 1981, there wasn't much that Costner didn't accomplish on the amateur level. Yet, a quarter of a century after his high school graduation, Costner still feels disappointment when one subject is mentioned the 1980 McDonald's all-American team.

That's because Costner wasn't selected, although his future St. Joseph's teammate, Lonnie Mc-Farlan of Roman Catholic, was. "I really wanted to be a McDonald's all-American," said Costner, 42, who lives in North Jersey and serves as a manager for Ikon Office Solutions. "It hurt not to be selected." Costner has a different feeling these days about the game because what he didn't achieve, his son Brandon has. A 6-foot-9 senior forward from Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.

Brandon Costner will compete tomorrow in the McDonald's game at Notre Dame. He will represent the East squad in the matchup that brings together the nation's premier players. "When they told me, it was sort of weird, almost as if I didn't picture myself with the great players in the country," Brandon Costner said yesterday after practice with the East squad at Indiana University-South Bend. After working out with his fellow all-Americans since Sunday, Costner has a different perspective. "I feel I can compete with anybody, and maybe I've gotten a little bit of confidence since being here," he said.

Brandon Costner led Parochial A state champion Seton Hall Prep to the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title last week. He scored a title-game-record 31 points and added five rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks as the Pirates defeated fellow nationally ranked St. Patrick's of Elizabeth, 63-60. That performance earned Costner the MVP honor in the tournament, which includes the six New Jersey state champions. Tony Costner said having his son in the game has helped ease the disappointment he felt about being overlooked.

"I was elated when he got picked," his father said. "You can't imagine the thrill." Brandon Costner's game is defined by its versatility. He is a three-point threat, but can also post up. He averaged 18.7 points and 7.2 rebounds, while hitting 66 three-point field goals. -n jH Tony Costner, cheering at one of his son's Seton Hall Prep games this season, says, "It hurt not to be selected." He is thrilled about his son's honor.

Houston player is top dunker Greg Paulus of the East is the only all-American this season in both football and basketball. The 6-2 Paulus played quarterback for Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y, but will focus on basketball in college at Duke. Paulus is a popular figure this week. Notre Dame, site of tomorrow's game, was one of his college possibilities. He had considered playing both sports there.

Paulus was told that if he accepted a basketball scholarship at Duke, he wouldn't have the option to play football. "I almost came here to Notre Dame and a lot of people have been coming up to me and talking to me about it," Paulus said. "This is a great place. You can't go wrong whether it's Duke or Notre Dame. But I think the opportunity with Duke and Coach Mike Krzyzewski is going to be worth it at the end." He will attend North Carolina State, choosing the Wolfpack over UCLA.

His father's alma mater, St. Joseph's, attempted to recruit him, but Costner said he didn't want to attend school too close to his Montclair, N.J., home but also didn't want to go too far. North Carolina State provided the right combination, he said. Following his college career, Tony Costner played 12 seasons in Europe, competing in Italy, Spain, France and Greece. Brandon learned the game in Europe, where he lived until Tony came back with the family to the United States in 1998.

"I developed the European game there, and when I came here, I incorporated the other stuff," Brandon said. "It has been a nice mix." Also aiding his development has been playing one-on-one over the years with his father, who is 7 feet fall. "Those games helped me a lot," Brandon said. Father and son have great admiration for each other, but there is one serious difference of opinion that likely won't end. Tony Costner says his son beat him only once in one-on-one, when he was a sophomore.

"I told him just be grateful for one victory," Tony said after watching yesterday's practice. Tony then warned that Brandon's account of the games may differ slightly, and he was right. "He's not telling the truth," Brandon said, unable to contain laughter. "I have beaten him the last five or six times, and now he won't play me." Tony Costner left no doubt as to who was more talented as a high school player. "I was a center and dominant in my position, but at 6-9, he cannot only play the box, but he can step outside and shoot with anybody from the three-point line," Tony said.

"He can create his own shot off the dribble, is an excellent passer, and has a lot of different skills that make him better than I was." Contact staff writer Marc Narducci at 856-779-3225 or mnarducciphillynews.com. Boxer Evander Holyfield, Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green and Philadelphia basketball icon Sonny Hill were among the judges. Other winners. Mario Chalmers, a 6-2 Kansas recruit from Anchorage, Alaska, won the boys' three-point-shooting contest. Texas recruit Erika Arriaran was the girls' champion.

Players received one point for scoring with a regular basketball and two points for hitting a three with a red-white-and-blue ball. Arriaran scored 18 points in the final, more than anybody else. Chalmers, who had 18 points in the first round, won with 17 in the final. Team-ball winner. Richard Hendrix, a 6-9 Alabama recruit, and 6-1 Vanderbilt signee Christina Wirth were the team-ball winners.

Team-ball competition featured a male and female player shooting alternately from various distances. Down to one sport. Point guard By Marc Narducci INQUIRER STAFF WRITER SOUTH BEND, Ind. Gerald Green last night won the slam-dunk contest, a prelude to the McDonald's High School All-American Game, but it remains to be seen if he will take the next big leap in his basketball career, from high school to the NBA. Green, a 6-foot-8 high flier from Gulf Shores Academy in Houston, is considered a candidate to jump to the NBA.

After a practice yesterday, Green said he plans, at this point, to follow through on his commitment to Oklahoma State. "It's a question that I get all the time, but I'm not considering the NBA right now," Green said. "I'm looking forward to going to Oklahoma State." High school players have been known to change their minds. Green beat 6-10 Duke-bound Josh McRoberts in a sudden-death dunk-off in the competition conducted at Bethel College. The two had identical scores through regulation.
