The top four shows for the week ending Sept. 24 were all ABC, which scored six out of the top 10. As the ratings game goes, CBS held the other four of the top 10, but was barely edged out of second place in overall ratings by NBC, according to the A.C.N.

Nielsen Co. More- important, ABC appears to have hits on its hands with four of the new shows it introduced this season' "Taxi," "Mork Mirtdy," "Battlestar Galactica" and "Vegal," which were the top-, ranking new of the week. VTaxi" actually scored in the top 10, and all four made it into the top 20. Not even ABC can bat 1.000, however, and "Apple Pie" Scored SSth on a list of 65. Right down there at the bottom of the list, however, is NBC's "Who's Watching the Kids?" which must give NBC's new chief, Fred Silverman, mixed emotions.

The schedule he created for ABC is proof of his genius, but NBC's highest rated show was "Uttle House on the Prairie" in 14th place. The next most popular NBC shows for the week were "CHiPs" and Disney's "The Shaggy D.A.," which tied for 30th. CBS runs second to ABC in the new shows, with four that look like winners and three that appear to be losers. In the circle, with 30 percent or more share of the viewing audience, were "People," "Mary," "WKRP in ancinnati" and "Kaz." "In the Beginning," "Paper Chase" land "American Olrls" got off to a slow start. "Flying High" was pre-empted by the two-hour wedding of "Incredible Hulk." On NBC, the most popular of the new series was "Dick Clark's Live Wednesday," which scored a mediocre 27 percent share of the audience.

The Nielsen numbers on "Grandpa Goes to Capra Mysteries," "Waverly Wonders," and "Who's Watching the all scored in the dismal category. Pre-empted for one reason or another were "Lifeline" and "Sword of Justice." All the ratings are likely to swing widely, if not wildly, from week to week this time of year as viewers sample new offerings, then in some cases go right back to their old favorites. The ratings get more meaningful after the first three of four weeks except, of course, for those shows preempted by major sports events.
