In a terse announcement, the school said lliat Rodgers. a 1954 Georgia Tech graduate and liighly successful head coach at UCLA, had accepted the job, Kodgers was in California when the announccnient was made. It had been generally that he was Athletic Director i3obby Dodd 's first choice to replace Fulcher, but his acceptance of the job was a surprise. It was understood that Rodgors had siiid lie would not consider the job unless Tech softened its academic requirements chief reason for Fulchcr's departure. Dodd also had interviewed Lou Moltz of North Carolina State for the iob.

"Because of these changes, it is no longer as enjoyable for me to coach football as it once was," Fulcher's was head coach at Georgia Tech for two years one year as head coach at the University of Tampa and 10 years as high school coach or college assistant. He returned to Tech, his alma mater, in January, 1972, as successor to Bud Carson who was ousted after siK 'uding five years IS Dodd's successor. Fulcher's first season, Tech went 7-4-1, including winning the Liberty Bowl, but this past sea.son dii)- ped to 5-6. However, Fulcher was under no pressure from school or alumni to resign, Dodd was quite emphatic al)out his wish that Fulcher remain as head coach.

However, there were personal pressures. "1 have always enjoyed my a.ssociations with players and with the coaches, especially those at Georgia Tech," said Fulcher. "However, I find that the responsiljilities and problems of the job, outside of coJiching itself, have Ix-come increasingly demanding on my family and myself to the point that I am no longer happy with coaching." Fulcher plans to go into real estate, a job he held in 1969 when he previously dropped out of coaching for a year. Friends say they would not be surprised if Fulcher returns to coaching within the next few years. Word of Fulcher's planned resignation leaked out this past weekend, but he denied, or skirted, the rumor until Wednesday.
