It takes all the right components, including the current "look," to make big bucks up to $200,000 a year in New York, the modeling capital of the world. While the names and faces of top male models like Jeff Aquilon or Rick Edwards may not have the high recognition factor of a Christie Brinkley or Brooke Shields, the men are very much in demand. Men in general are paying more attention to how they they look; manufacturers of clothing and grooming aids are using more and more male models in advertising. As tastes and fashions change, there's an ongoing need for new looks and faces. "We've gone through the beach boy, muscle-bound type of guy who had been popular from the late '70s until a couple of years ago," said Joseph (Joey) Hunter, executive vice president of Ford Models, in New York, one of the world's leading modeling agencies.

"Now we're going for a more fit guy with less bulk. He should look athletic and conditioned without being over-muscular bulging biceps don't look good in a suit. "We're also going back to an Ail-American look, but it's not apple pie and freckles any more. The American look is evolving; it combines all the different nationalities that have made America great it's a more universal look." The best combination in looks today is darker hair and lighter eyes, he added. An aspiring male model also must be able to bridge the gap between looking sophisticated or traditional.

He must look at ease in a T-shirt and shorts as well as in a tuxedo. "Personality also is important," Hunter said. "Guys with terrific personalities make the best models; they are able to sell themselves and at the same time still be charming." As director of the Ford modeling agency's men's division, he recently compSeted his first nationwide search for the male Face of the '80s, similar to Eileen Ford's annual search for the female Super Model of the Year, conducted in cooperation with the Gillette Company and Gentlemen's Quarterly. The winner gets a two-year contract with Ford Models with $50,000 guaranteed annually. He also will appear in Gillette's Dry Look print advertising and in a fashion spread in Gentlemen's Quarterly.

Contestants, 18 years of age or over, entered by sending entry forms and pictures to participating retail stores in specific areas across the country. More than 20,000 applications came in. Ten regional finalists then were selected by a panel of judges. In June, the regional finalists appeared at the Men's Fashion Association fall press previews in Rye, N.Y., where the Face of the '80s was selected. A college student from California, brown- haired Richard Popejoy 21, had the right face and everything else that goes with it.

"It's the money," he said of his reasons for participating. "I want to see if I can make a career out of modeling if not, I'll finish college and go to dental school." Popejoy, who now has moved to New York, had been registered with a San Francisco agency for six months whije attending college and already had handled a variety of modeling assignments on the West Coast, including an appearance in a fashion ad in Seventeen magazine. He describes himself as "a jeans type" but says he's trying to build a suitable career wardrobe. People will have a chance to see Popejoy's winning ways in Gillette's Dry Look print advertising this fall. So how can a guy who doesn't win a contest break into modeling and earn $150 an hour, or $1,500 a day or even $200,000 a year? (Ten of the 75 Ford agency's male models walk away with the top figure, according to Hunter).

In addition to the qualities mentioned earlier, he should have good facial bone structure, stand between 5-foot-ll and 6- foot-1, wear a size 40 regular or long suit and not be too muscular, Hunter said. It's also a good idea to be clean shaven. Not too many make the grade. Hunter said that out of the 30 male models selected for tryouts each year, only one or two are signed on by the Ford agency.
