Page 18- Section Idaho Stall journal POCATELLO, IDAHO, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1974 MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT Talented Pocatellan presses 1st album A I Entertainment Writer Not all of Pocatello's musical aspirations belong to members of the youngest generation, a fact proven by the recent release of an album of ten songs written and performed by Chic Sorenson. The name will probably ring a bell i older, more established members of the i who i be delighted to hear from Chic and a he's been doing in Hollywood in films and music. Chic is the son of Mrs. Rupert Sorenson of Pocatello and the Mr. Sorenson (who was active in local Boy Scouting), and husband of the former Marcille Oliver, daughter of former police chief A.L.

Oliver and sister of Magistrate Court Judge Arthur P. Oliver. A 1942 graduate of Pocatello High School, Chic also attended the university here before entering the military. The grandson of the late W.P. Whitaker, former owner of Pocatello Greenhouses, he now makes his home in Redwood, convenient to his work in Hollywood where he concentrates on his songwriting and film making activities.

The album (SGS-1001) on Blue Seagull Records which includes a couple oi numlxjrs, "Georgia Jail House" and "Strangers on a Crowded Street." both of which were released as singles, was selected as pick of the week by Trans A i a Programming, which programs lor 2B radio stations, many in the South and middle America, but also in Phoenix, Reno, San a i a Washington, D.C.. New York, Hartford, Bangor, Albany and Salt Lake City. The album has been gelling substantial air play in Ihe Soulh and other metro arc-as, Chic reports. Sorenson got into recording through films, meeting up with ON THE TOWN Week's night life weighted with C-W HY SANDIK OKIIOItiNK Kntcrliiinnicnl Writer Some new faces, some old favorites, and some returning hits are all fealured on Pocatello's entertainment circuit this tt'ei-krrul. The new sighl.s and sounds are to be found, first al the SII.VKK DOLLAR'S (iol.l) ROOM, where Johnny West, a heavily experienced country performer, who has been seen with such greats as Lorefla Lynn and Ernesl Tubbs, is on the slagc wilh a Irio for support.

West has come to Pocatello for this weekend and next week, directly from an engagement in I.as Vegas. Another new face fealured in Ihe BANNOCK'S COI.DKIM I'ALACK is Gloria Kay. alone wilh her keyboard and vocal slylings. A single isn'l too unusual in the Bannock, but a single lady is a bil mil of Ihe ordinary. The Bannock is a good place lo gel away from Ihe hubbub wilh the expectation of mellow enlerlainmenl and a relaxing atmosphere.

New group aclion is Ihe order of Ihe evening at Ihe CliKKN TIUANCI.K where Idaho Falls' "Slarbrite Trio" is on stage. Wolf" (Daddy was a Blackfooi, Momma was Shoshone, Hungry Wolf is nothing, lost and all alone); lo the domestic love songs like "The Closing of Ihe Door" and to the country gospel faith affirmed in "Guide Me, Lord." Assisting on various numbers, most arranged by Grasso, are Tommy Morgan, an experienced harmonica player, and Terri Rinaldi, a former Miss Alabama, who has also recorded some of Chic's songs on her own Seagull album.

Terri's album features "Searching," the theme for "Pets," a negatively reviewed low-budget R-raled film lo which Sorenson's only connection is in the authorship of the song. Gelling away from his experience in lechnical films, Chic is presenlly producing a movie on Ihe life of Porter Rockwell, a Mormon gunfighter known as the Avenging Angel. "I first wrote Ihe music for the i then was asked to produce the film," he explains. "Filming should get underway about May of nexl year and most of Ihe filming will be done near Sail Lake and hopefully in some seclions of Idaho." Grasso is music supervisor for the Blue Seagull film, lo be called wpw9, Hqz kga of Porter Rockwell." A cut from the soundtrack is on the album, "Guide Me Lord." Blue Seagull not only publishes, produces and markets records, but also does filming for television, theater and commercial uses, as well as soundtrack scoring for independent film makers. Chic is execulive vice president of Ihe firm.

CHIC SORENSON'S FIRST ALBUM record producer Ralph Grasson (former lead guitarist wilh Jimmy Rodgers) in conneclion wilh the music portion of a film Chic was doing for the Navy. "The film was about bomb loading, (of alt things)," Grasso writes," and I couldn't see how he was going to make thai very interesting. But he did." "Instead of the standard, dry, uninleresling military film, he wrote a song and shot the film around it. He went on lo win the Cindy award for the best technical film of 1973, including awards for best music, writing and directing." Grasso says Chic's performance impressed him then, but it was a few monlhs laler when Chic signed lo do the score for a molion piclure, "Pels," when Chic came to Grasso for assistance. "The day he a to the studio with a rough recording of his theme song, I realized that he was a song writer with great talent and versatilily," Grasso recalls.

When Grasso asked why he didn'l record his own work. Chic replied, "I jusl wrile what I feel. I'm no performer." Chic in fact had been performing for occasional benefits and private audiences for some lime, so it wasn't lhal unusual for an album lo be born, "just for the fun of it," according to Grosso. From his background as a working cowboy, iruck driver, cat skinner, advertising man, writer and sailor, Chic has presenled len songs which reflect "the pain, the love, the beauty of, the simple answer to, life." It's weslern-country, distinctly Hollywood and not Nashville, and encompasses the whole style from the rock-a- billy rhythms of "Georgia Jail House," to the simple country humor of "Donald" (aboul a pet snake and completely devoid of Freudian overtones we have to come lo expect in younger, more commercial music); to the social statemenl of "Hungry PEZA: Delicious Combinations TO DELIGHT EVERY TASTE!
