Vigorous early trading and a pickup late in the day boosted volume to 3,240,000 shares, the biggest since 3,950,000 shares changed hands Jan. 16.

It compared with 3,090,000 Tuesday. A continued advance by oils, both international and domestic, was chilled by news that Russia had demanded the United States pull its Marines out of Lebanon. The oils converted plus to minus signs along a broad front and other issues reacted in sympathy. Five of the 15 most active stocks were and four were oils. Of 1,198 issues traded, 512 rose and 414 fell.

There were 117 new highs. 1 Nine of the 15 most active stocks rose, five fell and one was unchanged. Prices were mixed on the American Stock Kxchange. Volume was 870,000 shares compared with 940,000 Tuesday. Corporate bonds declined sharply in fairly active trading.

U. S. Government bonds were mixed in quiet dealings over the counter. There seems to be plenty of folks who have bought, been gifted with or inherited, claims of ownership in American industry who have not the wispiest notion of the meaning, rights and privileges inherent In a stock certificate.

From Carrier Corp. Vice President Fre-d F. Hoyt come amusing tales of his efforts, published in the Carrier Courier, to extend a personal invitation to attend the company's annual meeting. Hoyt uw.i the telephone to call stockholders at random--and he met up with unexpected reactions. Plaintively asked one- woman: "Do I have to be there?" Suspiciously demanded another: "How much doer it cost?" More than owner invited jrws.jjv/Trf by Hoyt didn't have any ideajrh.
