10 Ludington Daily News, Wednesday, December 3, 1969. Automobile World By DAVID W. CHUTE DETROIT (UPI) Experiments with gaseous fuels to replace gasoline in automobiles and reduce pollution have turned up one important conclusion: They're good, but not good enough. At least not yet. There are three types of gaseous fuels which have been tried in car engines: Liquid propane gas (LPG), liquid natural gas (LNG), and compressed natural gas (CNG).

The latter two are the same except that LNG is reduced to 256 degrees below zero to keep it liquid, and CNG remains in a gaseous state under 2,000 pounds pressure. By far the greater amount of experimentation has been done with LPG because it is easier to handle than natural gas. It liquefies at 44 degrees below zero and tank pressure is 200 pounds. Some 250,000 vehicles, most of them trucks and many in commercial use, are now fueled by LPG. Only experimental work on a few cars has been done on LNG and CNG.

Conversion of an internal combustion engine for LPG use costs about $300, gives less mileage per pound of fuel and its emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrous oxides are about the same as with gasoline. But carbon monoxide emissions are about half. Mileage Is Reduced With either compressed or liquid natural gas, emissions of hydrocarbons are about half those of gasoline, carbon monoxide is reduced more than six times, and nitrous oxides are cut more than 10 times. Mileage, however causes an even more severe penalty. The reason for these sharply lower objectionable emissions is that natural gas contains fewer reactive hydrocarbons, such as olefins and aromatics, which are the prime causes of photochemical smog and eye irritations.

But there are major penalties involved in both liquid natural gas and compressed natural gas. First, converting an engine to use liquid natural gas costs up to $1,500 a car and handling of such fuel requires extremely low temperature (-265 degrees). Evaporation Is Problem This can be accomplished by allowing a boil-off of the fuel into the atmosphere with the evaporative action keeping the remaining fuel at low temperature. But there is a huge cost penalty involved for an inter- mittenly-driven car where boil- off has to be constant. More fuel can be evaporated than is used in driving the car.

For compressed natural gas which stays in gaseous form, conversion costs are about $300, but the fuel tank must be built with enormously thick walls to withstand such high pressures. And the dangers of having 100 million automobiles on the road with 2,000 pound pressure tanks are obvious. They would become a substantial danger in event of collisions. On top of all this is the prob- Woman's View By GAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor NEW YORK (UPI) A new decade is almost here and with it comes an old, familiar word in word pretty. Pretty is a tame adjective to describe spring 1970 trends in feminine apparel, but that is what's happening after an era of tough, harsh clothes with a lot of construction.

Now, the fewer the seams, the better the lem of range a car could travel on a given amount of fuel. A gasoline-powered car with a 20-gallon tank could be expected to have a range of 300 miles. With LPG it might be as much as 250 miles. But with natural gas, either liquid or gas, the range would be cut to a maximum of 80 miles. collections. "It's going to be chic to be pretty. It's going to be stylish to be feminine," says designer Ceil Chapman, a long time proponent of the girly look and fabled for her evening clothes. To be sure, all the fanciful things that marked the late 60's still are maxi coat, the mini and midi skirts, the trousers suits. But the soft wave is on the way, say most of the designers and manufacturers participating in this week's series of shows for the nation's fashion press, radio and television representatives.

Part of the trend shows in the new fabrics, super thin wools and crepes that shape to the figure, crushed velvets in spring weights, quilted silk crepes, organzas and chiffons. The frills are back in the form of ruffled necklines and sleeves, starched lacy trims, the familiar white touches on navy. And with It all, for evening, designers again are cutting big flattering sleeves, slashing waistlines and plunging necklines. The look is pure Victoriana, except for the necklines. Even the hair styles are affected by this "pretty" look-the hottest style in the big salons is the Gibson Girl, piled high onto the crown and up off the neck except for a few tendrils, coped right from Charles Dana Gibson's drawings.

1 Circular and pleated, swirly skirts, feathers and shawls earmark the trend too. One master of the ultra-feminine is Ferdinando Sarmi who puts feathery borders on silk prints of his long formals with their sweeping skirts. Typical: Feathers dyed to coordinate border a big shawl which wraps a handsome "entrance" dress. The a pink and green silk floral. "We've always cut year even more so," says designer Pauline Trigere.

She's one designer reviving crepe de chine, one of the most flattering fabrics ever made. Even Jacques Tiffeau is on the same track. This French- born designer who helped the mini skirt and the pantsuit become a part of the American scene is doing cling in silk crepes, cotton jersey, and woolens. Some of the best evening dresses around are Tiffeau's billowy chiffons, short and long, and his new dressup black crepe with a matching dinner dress bare armed and black-belted at the waist. Why has fashion turned back the clock? The theories are there rebellion against constructed clothes, fashion cycles themselves which through the centuries have repeated, reaction against the space age in which we live.

Emilio Pucci, the Italian designer who was a revolutionist in the 1960's with directness of design and flair for color, told a UPI reporter in Rome: "Mankind is entering a new era inspired by courage and daring. In women's will see a delicate, romantic mood, feminine and flowing in contrast to the cold impersonality of science and technology."
