Spring, died January 29 in Johns Hopkins Hos- pital, Baltimore, after an illness of several months. Born in Texas, he was a son of the late John William and Florence May Harpold. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Virginia (Cantrell) Harpolci; one daughter, Mrs. Diane Lambert, Houston, Texas; two sons, Dan Harpold, Lanham, Md.

and Jon Harpold, Houston; one brother. Rev. William C. Harpold, West- minster; one sister, Mrs. Amy E.

Harpold, Salida, and two grandchildren. A service was conducted today in Salida, with burial in the Cotqpaxi (Colo.) Cemetery. R. GETTY BROWNING OAKLAND R. Getty Brown- ing, 81, native of here, died Sat- urday at the home of his daughter Mrs.

Charles Davant, Blowing Rock, N. C. Requiem mass was celebrated Monday at Raleigh (N.C.) Ca- thedral and interment was in Baleigh Cemetery. Mr. Browning was born in Oak- land the son of the late Richard T.

and Harriet (Twigg) Browning. He was a great grandson of Me- shack Browning. After receiving a degree in civil engineering, Mr. Browning worked for a time with the late Alec Mason, well known veteran Gar- rett County surveyor, and also with the late H. J.

Freer, the engineer who surveyed the route of the Preston Railroad from Hut- ton into me Breedlove and Wolf Run section. In 1908 he began work as an inspector for what later became the Maryland State Roads Commission, eventually ris- ing tD position of chief construc- tion engineer. He supervised con- struction of many bridges over the Nanticoke, Choptank, Bohemia, Sassafras, Elk, Miles and other rivers. In 1314-17 he supervised the erection of his largest bridge, the Hanover Street Bridge over the middle and main brarches of the Pafapsco River in Baltimore He later left the state service and worked for a ship construction company during World War In 1321 he moved to North Caro- lina and became division construc- tion and location engineer of tht State Highway Commission at Durham. Later he became chief locating and claim engineer and for years concentrated on locating and construction of the National Parkway through North Carolina In order to secure the most favor- able location he personally walked over the entire 253 miles of the parkway.

Mr. Browning retired from state service in 1958 having seen the practical completion of toe parkway project In recognition of his services the State of North Carolina, pnV to tus retirement, honored him bv naming one of the in the Great Balsam ing Peak. DENNIS FIKE MEYERSDALE Mrs. Ella Fike, 78, died yesterday at Church of the Brethren Home, Scalp Level. A native of Meyersdale, she was a. daughter of the late Simon and Julia (Arnold) Bowman and the widow of Dennis Fike. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs.

Joseph Enos, Johnstown; two sisters, Mrs. Milton Gnagy RD 3, and Mrs. Morgan Gough- nour, Mineral Point; three broth- ers, William Bowman, Marion, Henry Bowman, New York, and Joseph Bowman, Jen- jnerstown; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The body is at the Price Fu- neral Home where friends will be received after 2 p.m. today.

A service will be conducted there Saturday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Donald Hursh Interment will be in Freidens Cemetery. JAMES B. McGRAlL TERRA ALTA-James B.

Me Grail, 64, of 201 Washington)Ave nue, died yesterday at his resi dence. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs. James McGrail. Mr. McGrail was an engineer for the West Virginia State Road Department and a member of St Mary's Help of Christians Catho lie Church.

A veteran, of World War II, he was a member Terra Alta Post, American Le gion. The only survivors are five cou sins, James F. Tahaney, Miss Eleanor Tahaney and Mrs. Helen Jones, all of Keyser; Mrs. Kath rine Hayes, Washington and Mrs James Naughton, Elizabeth, NJ.

The body is at the Fike-Watson Funeral Home where friends will be received after 10 a.m. tomor- row. Requiem mass will be celebrat- ed Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Help of Christians Church and interment will be in Terra Alta Catholic Cemetery.
