32 Wooddate.17.51 3. Joseph I The Cosley Foundation Run for the Animals has become a tradition for many area runners. Saturday's event was evidence of how popular the races have become, with more than 2,100 finishers combined in the 5K. and 10K races. The mark, about 400 more than last year's race, was a new record.

Such numbers have made the annual Wheaton event, run in conjunction with the Cream of Wheaton festival, the largest park district running race in the state, according to Greg Evans. On loan from the Oak Park Park District to emcee the post-race festivities, Evans said the large turnout helped raise an impressive $18,000 for the Cosley Animal Farm, which will use the money to renovate its wildlife area. Wheaton resident Jodi Benware, 34, improved from last year's second- place finish in the 10K to claim first place this year in 39:28. A new personal record, the time was more than a minute and a half better than her previous best. "This was the most fun I've ever had in a race because I've never felt more relaxed," said Benware, who is planning to run Grandma's Marathon in a week and a half.

She said Saturday's victory was a boost to her confidence heading into the bigger race. Five employees of the Carol Stream Police Department took part in the race. The chief of police, three social workers and an office worker enjoyed the race and Cream of Wheaton festivities. Social worker Mindi Thomas made the 5K her first race of the year. She is training for the Chicago Half Marathon later this year.

Thomas started the race in the middle of the pack and had just planned to finish, but after maintaining a nine-minute-mile pace, ended up finishing in 27:34. Co-worker Eileen Molloy met with similar results. Separated from her friends in the early going, she was still pleased to finish the 5K race in just over 25 minutes. She said she was chagrined, however, at a later development. Opting for the 5K race instead of the 10K because she had to leave early to go to a wedding, Molloy discovered the choice didn't really matter.

"I found out I couldn't leave, anyway," she said, "because of the Susan Terwedow Running around DuPage street closings for the race that were still going on." 5K Results Mala overall winner: 1. In its fourth year, race director Mark Mandel and the race committee continue to add convenience and fun for competitors. Many race participants were repeat runners evidence of the excellent organization. This year, free child care for event participants was an added perk among the race's many extras. Each of the 48 participants in the half-mile youth race received Teeny Beanies. A disc jockey played music before and after the race.

All of the standard post-race refreshments were available, including fruit and 6-inch individually wrapped cookies from a local bakery. Race awards were specially made glass mugs, and about 80 raffle prizes were also given away during the award ceremony. Results Male overall: 1. Thomas Jurgens, 48, Batavia, 16:21. Z.
