PHD stands for Preservation for Human Dignity. The Palatine agency celebrated 35 years of service; its professional staff offers counseling, education and integrated support to needy mothers.

Last year alone, they drew more than 4,500 dierit visits. School officials say making the nearly mile-long, round-trip walk has become an annual Thanksgiving tradition. Her classmate, Anna Joswiak, 13, of Palatine agreed saying she picked out a fleece blanket for her gift. "It's really soft and thick," Joswiak said. "I hope it keeps the baby really warm." Another eighth-grader, Michael Cipola, 13, of Inverness said he would miss the walk after doing it so many years in a row. Consequently, he made sure to pick out a memorable gift "It's a 92-pack of diapers," he said. "It's the biggest one I could find." School and PHD officials think the tradition dates back about 14 years.

It has become so entrenched that Vincus and her staff count on the contributions of diapers, formula and baby clothes to help them meet the rising need during the holidays. Last year alone, the Baby Closet drew more than 2,000 mothers in need of diapers and other things, and this year they already have seen 2,200. Vincus says the majority of the women they serve live at or below the poverty level Many are single mothers but just as many are married struggling to make ends meet, she said.
