Coleus, available in an array of reds, bronzes and greens, grows attractively in pots and tubs. Any of the Carefree varieties are recommended for container growing. Coleus must be grown in shade or partial shade. For sunny areas, try Cascade petunias. They're available in shades of red, pink, coral and blue, as weil as white.

Join an increasing number of homeowners and apartment dwellers who are enjoying the benefits of container gardening. Plants grown in containers can be located almost anywhere on porches, patios and balconies. They can be moved to suit the occasion, or bring them indoors for party decorations. With container gardening in vogue, gardeners are turning to just about anything that will hold soil to grow plants like coleus, impatiens, browallia, pentunias and thunbergia. Standard clay, ceramic or plastic containers make excellent enclosures for growing plants.

Or, if you want to be more creative, try an old crock, a wooden tub, a nail keg or wood garden cart. If the piece doesn't lend itself well to container growing, you frequently can make up for this deficiency by placing the plants in clay or plastic pots and putting the pots inside the container. Whatever is used, the gardener should take care to see that the container allows excess water to drain off so that roots of the plants do not stand in water. If the container doesn't have a drain outlet, a layer of gravel or crushed stone in the bottom will help absorb excess water. Some of the best plants for container growing are the free-branching or cascading varieties which build a full crown, then tumble over the ssides of the pot.

There are several plants already on the market, and some new varieties will be available this year, which grow exceptionally well in containers. Last year, Pan American Seed Co. introduced Scarlet Ripple impatiens which lent themselves well to container growing, This year, Pan-American horticulturists are introducing three new colors of Ripple impatiens rose, fuchsia and orange.
