Monday, Jan. 18, 1993 The Philadelphia Inquirer H-5 Despite turnovers, Indians coast to win over the Bucks By Adam Gusdorff INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Council Rock committed 27 turnovers and 21 personal fouls compared to 20 and 15 for Central Bucks West in the teams' Suburban One National game Friday night. But the host Indians (7-5 overall, 4- 2 league) also outrebounded, outhustled and simply outplayed the Bucks (4-8, 2-4) to coast to a 61-36 win. C. B.

West coach Wayne Finkbeiner said his team made some poor decisions on offense and failed to take advantage of Rock's turnovers in the transition game. "There are going to be nights when the shots aren't going in," he said, "but we just weren't making good decisions. We did some nice things defensively, but we made some critical turnovers. "Then we didn't convert when they turned the ball over, and we let them get some transition layups." For the Indians, it all began in the middle, where center Ryan Lexer and forward Matt Kessler helped the hosts dominate with a 38-16 rebounding edge. Lexer had 10 rebounds and 4 blocks to go with his 10 points.

Kessler also scored 10 points and added 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. Their interior defense helped hold the Bucks to just one field goal and 6 points in a 13-minute span from late in the first quarter to early in the third. "Kessler is a rebounding machine," coach Dennis Matika said. "And Ryan, at (6 feet, 8 inches), is able to block some shots. "Matt is more physical and Ryan has more finesse.

What makes them so good is that they complement each TIGER: PO 20 145 The Tigers' Brian Davis (11) scored only two points. When Lexer and Kessler play well, it's usually a long day for the opposition, because the Indians also have multitalented Brian Cassidy. He was the only player for either team who scored in all four quarters, as he amassed a game-high 18 points. He also chipped in 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a blocked shot.

Matika said the senior was a big reason for the team's early success Kondyra. with its pressing defense. Leading, 16-11, after one quarter, the Indians smothered the Bucks over the next 16 minutes. They outscored them, 27-14, in that span, and outrebounded West, 19-2. In the fourth quarter, the Bucks never got closer than 43-27.

Two players get 52 points and 25 rebounds not far from foes' total. Tigers' head of steam blows away Patriots INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Orick Smith and Alan Munford put on a show during Harry Truman's 74-63 home-court win over Central Bucks East Friday night.

They combined for 52 points and 25 rebounds, just one rebound less than East's entire team had. "If we stay on the boards, the other team has to worry about us, and that gets our running game going," said Smith (26 points, 14 rebounds). "We want the rebounds, not fancy baskets," said Munford (26 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocked shots). "Orick has been our shooter," Tigers coach Broadus Davis said, "and Alan Munford is starting to play up. Now he's able to go to the hole, or pull up and take that short jumper." Truman came to the Suburban One National Conference game shorthanded.

But the Tigers (84, 4-2) were off and running right from the start, never trailing after a 4-0 start, doubling East's point total by halftime, 42-21. Smith and Munford were unstoppable inside, with Munford nearly bringing the building down with a thunderous, driving, onehanded slam dunk midway through the second period. East (4-7, 3-3) seemed to be playing on a treadmill. Coach Jeff Silk tried every lineup he could, using 10 players in the first half, but his team shot just 25 percent (7 for 28) from the field in that half.

It shot 23 for 64 overall, 35.9 percent, and was 8 for 21 in three-point attempts. "It's a tired old cliche, but we were not mentally ready to play," the Patriots coach said. "This was our worst shooting game of the season. I kept trying to find guys who were ready to play. "Broadus had his guys well prepared.

At least we didn't quit. We made a nice run at the end." East's defense (15 steals) kept the final score more respectable than the game was. Joe Carlon drilled 5 three-pointers and scored 24 points. Truman's motivation for the game came from Tuesday night's 56-46 loss at Neshaminy, which knocked the Tigers out of a first-place tie in the Patriot Division. "We had to play better," Munford said.

"Neshaminy slapped uS in the face," Smith added. Jeremy Roemer finished with 14 points and 5 assists for Truman, and Tisone managed to play long enough to record 6 assists. The Tigers shot 59.3 percent for the game (35 for 59), scoring 16 points off either offensive rebounds or steals. "We're not there yet," said Davis, whose team remains tied with Council Rock for second place behind Pennsbury in the Patriot Division. "I'm happy that our young kids are starting to play better."
