If the product is defective or has been misrepresented, you may return the item to the The Better Business Bureau ha? spme advice if you, need to return an item to a store. A'itore is not obligated to accept items for return except in cases where an item is defective or has been misrepresented. In some states, the store is required by law to disclose clearly what its return policies are.

In any case, be sure you know the store's return policy before you makeyour purchase. There are three basic types of returns: exchanges, credits and refunds. With an exchange, the item may be returned and replaced with another item of the same kind. This privilege is usually extended when the purchaser has made a mistake such as the size or color of an item. When an item is returned for credit, the purchaser is given a credit slip or his account is credited with the amount of the purchase.

The customer may then apply that amount toward the purchase of other items in the store. Under a refund policy, the customer gets his money back. A refund is the store's way of assuring its customers that they will gain satisfaction when shopping there. Stores are not compelled by any law to adopt these policies. They are adopted voluntarily by the store to give its customers better service.

These policies usually require that the goods be returned within a specified time and in new condition. The store will also usually require a sales slip or other evidence that the item was purchased there and not at another store. Some products purchased in stores have written warranties which state what a customer should do if anything is wrong with the product. The return policy in the warranty will apply so you should read the warranty before returning the item to the store. You may be required to mail the item to the manufacturer or take it to a place other than the store where you purchased the product.

Regardless of the store's return policy, if the product you purchased is defective or was misrepresented, laws in all states require a store to make good in such a case. Written contracts sometimes have special provisions for the return of goods and usually provide their own conditions for the return and cancellation of the agreement. Make sure you read and completely understand all of the terms of the contract before you sign. Never sign a blank contract and always keep a copy of the contract. Before you make a purchase, you should consider the store's return policy, if any.

But the best solution is to make sure you purchase the product you need or want the first time.
