I1ZC Pieter Bruegel Different painters are usually noted for different things, for how they worked or what they expressed. Pieter Bruegel, who lived from to 1569, loved to tell stories in his paintings. Most often, these stories concern the daily life of Flemish peasants at work and play.

At one time, Bruegel planned to do a series of paintings to show the occupations of these peasants during each month of the year. Five of these paintings were completed: "Dark Day," "Hunters in the Snow," "Haymaking," "The Harvesters," and "Return of the Herds." He also was fascinated by the peasants enjoying their feasting and merrymaking. These he described with much gusto and humor in "The Wedding," "Ker- messe," and "The Battle of Carnival and Lent." But it is not just for his storytelling that Bruegel is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He is especially praised for his skill in design and for his arrangement of masses of figures and distant landscapes into a beautiful pattern in space. Unlike the work of many of the artists of his time, his color still appears fresh and daring.

Bruegel spent practically all of his life in his native Flanders. But his fame spread throughout Europe. It is interesting to know that during the 18th and 19th centuries, the art critics of the world did not consider Bruegel a great painter. But the 20th century, with its revived interest in design and color, again began to consider him the great painter that he is. FUN TIME The Riddle Box 1.
