Samuel, who refers lo the robes as though they were people, said she has visited them all. "I had lo go out to each robe to meet it and greet it and sec what it had to teach me," she said. "I haven't had a live teacher my only teachers were the robes." Samuel is the author of "The Raven's Tail," the only book on the subject. She said she became interested in Chilkat-style weaving because she liked circles and in Chilkal found a weaving style that produced perfect circles. She 'said she came upon Ravenstail during her study of Chilkal weaving.

"I became aware of the existence of the older style of weaving," she said. "When I met the first (Ravensiail robe), I just became enamored of the design and I had to find out how to do that, too." Traveling to Leningrad on a Canadian government grant in 1981, Samuel spent a week viewing the Ravensiail robes. She said the Russians were surprised that she didn't spend her time sightseeing, but came back day after day to view the robes. She said she would study a part of each robe, then go back to her hotel room and try to recreate it. While she was allowed to handle the robes and was even given the; use of an office nearby, she was of course not allowed to unravel the weave to sec how it was put together.

For that reason, she said, the remnants, which had unhcmmed edges that she could examine closely, were invaluable. "There's a huge difference between knowing how threads go and knowing how they got there," she said. By a method of trial and error she figured out how to do the weaving. Since then she has made four Ravenstail robes and has introduced the style to scores of people in workshops and classes throughout North America and in New Zealand. She said New Zealand's native Maori people have a weaving style that is in some ways similar.

But she noted that Alaska is the center of Ravensiail studies and the place where actual work is being done. "Here, it's a major revival," she said happily. After leaving Silka, Samuel is to travel to Hoonah, luneau and Metlakala. She has (aught Ravenstail weaving throughout Southeast Alaska under the sponsorship of the University of Alaska.
