ESTHEftVILLE DAILY NEWB, DEC. 7, 1973 Dorsetl to 1973 NEA Ail-American team By Ira Berkow NEW YORK (NEA) Could a player make AI1- American who is credited as the main force in turning his football team from one oT the five worst in the country to one of the 20 best? Could a player make Ail- American who gained 209 yards rushing in the slush against Notre Dame, against a defense which was holding whole teams to an average of 84 yards rushing? Could a player make All- American who has led his team to its first bowl invitation in 17 years by averaging ISO yards rushing per game? Could a player make Ail- American who is a freshman? The answers: Yes. Yes. Yes. Why not? The player is Tony Dorsett, the freshman back for the University of Pittsburgh.

And he has made first team Ail-American on the annual Newspaper Enterprise Association team released today. The achievement of a freshman making the team looms even larger when one considers that only two other players out of the 23 first- team honorees are underclassmen: junior linebacker Rod Shoate of Oklahoma and sophomore linebacker Woodrow Lowe of Alabama. There are no repeaters from last year's team. UCLA, which had the highest scoring average (4S.7) of any team in the nation going into the last weekend of the season, led the nation's schools in the AU-American pickings with three first- 1973 NEA All-America First Tttm mm a a TE LB Lyim Swum Joint Mete Al Mm Buddy Brown Tyler UfauCl WN Wymen OeveCaeper tCal. The quarterback is Danny White of Arizona State, whose father, Wilford (Whizzer) White, played halfback for the same college and went on to the Chicago Bears. Perhaps the most physically imposing player is Ed Jones, senior defensive tackle for Tennessee State. He is 6-9, 268. Dorsett is the smallest player all around at out he is big enough to have helped Pitt to a winning season, after a 1-10 mark last year. And the team is going to the Siesta Bowl, the first such post-season in-' vitation for Pittsburgh since 1956.

Holiday Ban Challenged WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) Iowa's ban on holiday high school sports practices may be headed for the courts. The Waterloo School Board next Monday will take up a resolution challenging the Iowa High School Athletic Association's ban on holiday practices.

Tom Lind, a board member and athletic director at Columbus High School, said he will offer the resolution. He said the schools have no quarrel with the association's call to cancel interscholastic competition Dec. 22-30, but disagree with two other actions taken last week. Lind said the board feels the association may have overstepped its authority in: all practices in school facilities December 22nd through 30th. letting school personnel coach or supervise any activities related to basketball, wrestling or swimming whether it be at the school or any other place.

Bernie Saggau, executive- secretary of the association, said he was aware of the Waterloo schools' feelings. "I know they have been talking about it," Saggau said. "They feel that they should be allowed to conduct their programs during the holiday period." OPEN BOWLING SCHEDULE: 9 p.m. to closing. p.m.
