BUY DIRECT SAVE Death sentences for Tisons upheld PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona Supreme Court yesterday upheld the death sentences of Raymond and Ricky Tison, saying in part they "stood by, armed with guns, while their companions slaughtered" a family. The Tisons were convicted of murders that occurred in connection with the July 30, 1978, prison escape of their father, Gary, and another convict, Randy Greenawalt. The Tisons and their brother Donald were helping Greenawalt and their father escape from Arizona State Prison when their escape car broke down. The gang flagged down a car occupied by John Lyons, his wife Donnelda, their son Christopher and a niece, Theresa Tyson of Las Vegas (no relation to the Arizona Tisons).

Greenawalt and Raymond and Ricky Tison were captured at a roadblock following a shoot-out near Casa Grande. Donald Tison was killed during the shoot-out, and Gary Tison's body was found later about a mile from the shoot-out site. Ten days later, the bodies of the Lyons family and the Tyson girl were found near the Tisons' disabled car. In upholding the Tisons' convictions, the Supreme Court noted they had withdrawn the guilty pleas they once had entered to escape the death sentence in exchange for testimony against Greenawalt. The agreement called for testimony "in any proceedings," including the escape plot, the court said.
