Gnnton City Telegram luifsHny, May 3,1979 Run at Ratings: Out with the Old, On with the New LOS ANGELES (AP) CBS, seemingly in a strong position to make a run at ratings-leader ABC, has added seven new series to its fall schedule and done away with "The Paper Chase," the law school drama loved by critics but ignored by viewers. Also absent from CBS' lineup when the fall season begins next September will be Mary Tyler Moore Hour," "Good Times," "Billy," "Dear Detective" and "Time Express," the network announced Tuesday. CBS, second to ABC in the ratings for most of the 1978-79 Nielsens season, will add seven new shows to its lineup four hour-long dramas and three half-hour sitcoms. CBS strengthened its programming in the latter half of the current season with the addition of replacement series that became hits: "White Dukes of Hazzard" and "WKRP in Cincinnati." Those programs will return, along with 10 other series. Most will be back in their current time slots.

Only "The Jeffersons" will be moved, from Wednesday to Sunday. "All in the Family," the net- work's top comedy hit through most of the decade, will not be back, as such. It will be replaced by "Archie Bunker's Place," a sitcom featuring Carroll O'Connor, the last original member of the "All in the Family" cast. Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker, will make some guest appearances on the show, the network announced, Mary Tyler Moore, who failed in two series with variety themes, will join the schedule later in the year with a sitcom. CBS did not touch its pro- grams on Monday, Thursday and Friday nights, the network's strongest nights.

CBS said that "Stockard Channing in Just Friends," a midseason show that was a mild hit in the ratings, will be back on the schedule at the end of 1979. "Paper Chase" was considered a favorite of CBS Chairman William Paley, a status that saved the show from cancellation for a year. In the end, though, ratings had the final say. "Paper Chase" spent Just a Hint for Trailing NBC NEW YORK (AP)-It was little more than a hint that something from NBC might catch on, but for the No. 3 network, even that might be a good sign.
