Adelaide Jeanne Darling, Purdue University's "golden girl" lias been lopppd off Ihe traveling squad, for Saturday's Purdue-Buckeye gome at Ohio State. Al Wright, director of the Purdue band, said Monday Adelaide can't jo with the 41-me band, simply because she is a girl.

Wright insisted he wasn't cutting Adelaide because her hula dance has kept the men warm in half-time programs, nor because her wiggles have left her femole audience largely cold. "We only take the full band of 275 players on two away-from- home games a season," Wright said. "We take the pep band on two other trips, but we never take women along on the pep band trips." (UPI)-Republican Nelson A. Rockefeller won New York's battle of the millionaires with more than half a million votes to spare today, unseating Democratic Gov. Averell Harrimon. Rockefeller's stunning personal victory, in his first try for public office and in contrast to a Democratic tide across Ihe nation, pushed him to the forefront of GOP presidential possibilities for 1960. Elected with Rockefeller, by a much smaller margin, was a new Republican U.S.

senator, Rep. Kenneth.B. Keating of Rochester, who will replace retiring I i Ives. Will, only ft few scattered districts slill unac- cquntcd for, the vote was Rockefeller 3.102,211; Harriman, Kealing lopped Hogan by a vote of 2,815,506 to 2,703,727 wilh only a few'dislricts still unreporlecl. The only consolation for Democrats in New York appeared to b.e the election of two congressmen in upstate districts formerly held by Republicans and the still-unde- citled race for slate controller in which Harriman's running mate, incumbent Controller Arthur Levitt, was leading-after all other top spots had been conceded to Republicans.

The 50 year old Rockefeller danced a jig in his campaign headquarters shortly after Hnrri- man conceded defeat at 10:45 p.m. Then he told newsmen that talks about 1960 "has absolutely no meaning at all" and "I really am not interested." He said Vice President Richard M. Nixon, considered a shoo-in for Ihe 19GO nomination had Rockefeller lost Tuesday's election, telephoned congratulations Washington. "He was delighted," Rockefeller reported. "He said it was the brightest spot on the Rockefeller laughed.

His listeners laughed, then he continued, "the national scene for the Republican Party." Rockefeller cut heavily into the normally large Democratic ma. jority in New York City, trailing Harriman by only about 200,000 voles, Harriman got about 57 per cent of Ihe city vote, well short of the margin needed by most Democrats to overcome upstate Republican votes. Keating ran far behind his Democratic opponent, New York County Dist. Ally. Frank's.

Hogan, in the city and won election by a margin of a little more than 100,000 votes. Rockefeller's victory bore similarities to Harriman's own election four years ago. Neither man previously had run for elective office. Both had inherited large fortunes, proved their osvn business ability in family enterprises and served in appointive posts in the federal government. SAFETY RECORD IMPROVES SAN FRANCISCO (UP!)
