SECTION C.IDAHO STATE JOURNAL POCATELLO, IDAHO, SUNDAY, AUGUST 1 MARRIED TO SUSPENSE WRITER '45 PHS Grad Gains Solid Reputation For Innovative Approach in Designing Ask members of the Pocatello High School class of 1945 if they remember Cleo Baldon, widely known California furniture designer. The answer no doubt will be negative. Yet, Ms. Baldon was graduated with the class, and her mother (Mrs. Esther Chute) was a PHS teacher.

They live in the Los Angeles area above Sunse! Strip in a Mediterranean-style house, which Cleo redesigned from an awkward, lifeless dwelling into a comfortable place of warmth. A two-page picture story on the Melchiors and their home appeared in a California Sunday magazine under the heading, "Cleo Baldon and Ib Melchior: She devises designs for living, he designs devices for thrilling." Melchior writes suspense novels.

Taking her to museums, he pointed out Chippendale and Hepplewhite furniture, and her eyes grew 'By ten, I began living in houses in my head. I wrote letters to furniture companies asking about their products, and it caused my mother some problems.

Salesmen were always arriving at the door to take orders, and she had to explain that it was just a little girl who'd been writing those "After earning a degree in design, Cleo began a business of her own, gradually building a solid reputation for her innovative approach to interior landscaping, swimming pools and furniture. She works often with unfinished oak, oiled and waxed ('1 like oak because it feels alive'), and her chairs, sofas and tables show a special signature: the joinings are exposed, to make the method of construction visible.
