How a Clyde Young Man Won Cleveland Girl-Wires Carried Cupid's Messages.

One of the most romantic courtships on record came to a happy conclusion when Miss Laura Stafford, one of the most popular telephone operators in the east branch of the Cleveland Telephone company, was married to Mr. Bert F. Sloan, who for about a year was night timekeeper at one of the large packing establishments at the end of Clark avenue. The wedding ceremony was per- Clara B. New-berry Lgainst Spencer B.

Newberry, the Soei.ny for Savings, of Cleveland, and the Moss National bank, of SandusKy. is the title of an action for alimcny, tut not for divorce, iiled in the common pleas com of Erie county a'jout midnight last night. Prof Mrs. Newberry. wno arc the principal parties to the suit, have been residents of Sandusky for a number ot years, iheir home being at the corner of Washington and streets.

They are wealthy and also prominent, not only iu Sandusky, but in other cities. The is a (laughter of Andrew D. White, United States ambassador to Germany. The Principal defendant was formerly a professor at Corneh-eoHege, Ithaca, K. ard is now one of the iormed by Rev.

G. 0. King, at the home bride's parsnts, 3417 avenue. The affair was a quiet one and has just ueen made public. There was nothing grand or ostentatious about it, still, wound about the courtship' and engagement, which lasted nearly a year, there is a story of unbounded interest.

The courtship was conducted over the telephone. Miss Stafford became acquainted with the man of her choice over the telephone, and, although neither party had seen the other acquaintance made rapid strides and they fell in love with each other. During the long and tiresome nights I'wfisn Miss Stafford was sitting a't her switchboard answering the calls of the subscribers she would-talk to the maa she loved and it-was not until seven months after they had become acquainted in this unusual way that they met and plighted their troth. An engagement was made and on account of the occupation of both, working nights all the time, they made love over the telephone and made better progress than most people we meet, hold hands, exchange goo-goo eyes, cuddle close together and breathe those little airy nothings which the story writer loves to tell. Miss Stafford and her chosen one decided to become husband and wifs stockholders and general manager of the extensive plant of the Portland Cement company ai Bay Bridge.

It is understood that for some time the domestic relations of Mr. and Mrs. Newberry have not been pleasant, an.l the petition filed in the courts is in some Report that representatives of Prof, and Mrs. Newberry held a conference Mondav evening, but they could not agree and the filing of the suit at midnight followed. King and Guerin are the attorneys for the plaintiff.

They had some of the court officials aroused and summons was placed In the hands of the sheriff. The return snows that summons was serveo upon Prof. Newberry about 1 o'clock this morning at his residence. The petition was immediately withdrawn "from the files and locked up a' King Guerin's office, so it is inaccessible, and itscontents are not known in detail Information from a reliable source, however, is that Frof Newberry charged 4 with, adultery with several women on different occasions. Some of the names are given in the petition.

One or two of the alleged co- respondents are Sandusky women, and it is said that another now lives In Toledo. It is further stated that the parties have not lived as husnand and wife for two years past. prays that the defendant Newberry may be enjoined from deposing of his property or drawirg hi.i salary.
