A If A A "tt Orioles Rally in Ninth to Whip Red box Keeping Posted With Bill Reddy Seven months before play is scheduled here, officials in charge of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's championship hockey tournament met yesterday at Hotel Syracuse. It may have seemed a bit early, but there's so much to do that an early start seemed indicated. Because of the early start, and sound planning, the NCAA tourney here should be a rousing success. Nobody knows which teams will be Section I Sports THE POST-STANDARD Financial Classified SYRACUSE, N.Y., WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1966 17 Sisk Stars As Pirates Clayton, Herrera Hit Homers Bisons Rally in Ninth vl Pennant Chases i INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE Rcddy involved as contestants, but we know which teams will provide early leadership. Colgate University and Hamilton College will co-host the tourney, and they've already had experience.

They Blank Mets Down Chiefs teamed up to host the NCAA hockey tournament at ca in 1962, and it was a tremendous success, artistically and financially. Walt Splairi, a man of many titles who has been tub-thumper for Colgate teams for a dozen years, is tournament director for the three-day event slated at the Onondaga County War Memorial's rink March 1618, 1967. Walt and Mox Weber, Hamilton's director of athletics, teamed up for the Utica affair, and they're back on the job again. Boston University's Vic Stout, graduate manager at BU and chairman of the hockey rules committee, was in town yesterday for several hours of preliminary discussion. As usual there will be two (cams from the West, two teams from the East, in the championship tourney here, and you can't blame the sponsors for hoping that upstate New York will get a team or two into the field for the finals.

If Clarkson, St. Lawrence, Cornell or Colgate should make it to the round of four, the War Memorial walls will bulge. In any event, college hockey has grown in popularity so swiftly that tickets should move rapidly, once they go on sale er the first of next year. For those who haven't seen college hockey lately, there'll be another chance for a preview of the NCAA tourney when Clarkson and Colgate meet in their annual game at the War Memorial on Friday night, Jan. 27.

This has become an eagerly-awaited mid-winter fixture here, and the response to earlier contests helped "sell" the NCAA on the idea of playing its title tourney here. A fine series of turnouts for the four games next March could go far towards bringing the tourney back here again, too. The Pirate righthander allowed only one runner to reach second Larry Elliot on single in the first in gaining his seventh victory against two defeats. Sisk also collected two of the Pirates eight hits. He singled with one out in the second, went to second on Gene Alley's single, to third on a force play and home on a single by Roberto Clomente. The Pirates scored their second run in the fourth when Jose Pagan walked, moved to on a ground out and raced home as Sisk singled to left. The final Pirate run counted even though the home-team Mets didn't bat in their half of the seventh.

There's a rule on the books prohibiting its use, but umpires have decided the rule can't be enforced, so they ignore it Meantime, as many as one out of every three pitchers uses the spitball regularly, according to a baseball scout who should know. The last pitcher to be thrown out of a ball game for using a spitball was Nelson Potter, back in the 40's, which means that no umpire has acknowledged use of the illegal pitch in nearly 20 years! That put up the decision to tiny Teo, and he cracked his fourth hit of the game, a single to left, to score Perry. He singled in the first, tripled on a freak bounce past Lopez to score pinch-hitter Joe Hicks in the third with Buffalo's first run and homered over the screen in the fifth for the third home- team run.
