PAGE SIX THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1963 Rosy Future Is Forecast By Ford 11 rosy future for the automotive industry was forecast Thursday at Ford Motor annual meeting and board chairman Henry Ford II outlined his suggestions to insure economic progress in the United States. Newly elected Ford president Arjay Miller told the more than 1,000 stockholders who attended the meeting that the company anticipated car sales would average close to the seven million mark for the next few years. "Of particular importance in the outlook is the consistent increase in disposable income," Miller said. "This is the income people have left to spend after they have paid their taxes. Disposable income has increased each year in spite of recessions.

This year's income is almost 50 per cent higher than in 1955." After the routine meeting of the business was conducted. Ford gave his views on the national situation. He said he felt in order to promote the economic growth of the United Slates a tax cut and strict controls of governmental expenditure were needed. The way to get more growth is to reduce government actions that interfere with growth. We need lower tax rates that discriminate less against buying, investing and earnings; less inter- vention in wage-price matters; fewer government spending programs to benefit local, community and political interests; a more reliance on open opportunity to compete." Ford said.

In the event of a tax cut, he said, the administration and legislative branch of the government should work to cut expenditures to the bone." Strike Caused Much Damage To the Public NEW YORK (UPD New York's 114-day newspaper strike caused incalculable damage to the public welfare and public policy and showed why the press is part of a democratic society's life- stream. These are the conclusions of a study, "Public Policy in a Newspaper strike," in the Columbia Journalism Review. The quarterly is published under auspices of the Columbia University Graduate School of Jounalism and is designed to assess journalistic performance. The report found the newspaper blackout that ended March 31 deprived the public of its watchdog in municipal affairs, muffled the voices of minority groups, dampened public debate and stilled civic group opinion.

The study was written by civic affairs reporters Clayton Knowles and Richard P. Hunt. The authors' conclusions said in part: strike affected government by hampering its work informing the public, as shown by the reports and statements hat were withheld; by inhibiting aw enforcement in the protection of consumers and tenants; by nterfering with the recruitment of policemen and the protection of I civil rights I "The strike showed how and why the press is part of the life- stream of a democratic society, dependent as it is upon a free and continuous exchange between and the governed. "The strike cost the publishers and their employes dearly, and business throughout the city was hurt. The economic price could be reckoned and paid, but the cost to the public welfare and the public policy was truly incalculable."
