TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 1956 BLYTHEVILLE (ARK.) COURIER NEWS PAGE NINE BETWEEN WUNME Gil McDoujaW One of the leading women golfers Is off the circuit for a year broke down under the strain of chasing the almighty buck as a pro. Bobby Layne had a bunch of hit Lion coaches as hli gueit on llx Teiai panhandle trying to intercut them in oil well Before he reached the Yankees, Gil McGougald threatened' to quit baseball three different times discouraged trying to make a living as minor league father. The shortstop convert (Mickey Mantle) says he'll be the best in baseball by '57) has been truck driver, master carpenter and mason and a shoe designer and went to college on a basketball scholarship. A guy was faulting the women golfers because they can't powder a ball as far as the men. ed Rev Hanson, "We man not have the length, but we do have the contours." The Hanson future is tied up In a grapefruit ranch which she's just bought on the desert 20 miles outside Palm Springs "and i), will'make a better.golfer of me," says Bev "I've lacked that extra drivj and incentive which characterizes champs like the Babe (Zaharias).

Now I've got plenty of the bank and that big mortgage on my land." Irony note: Years ago boxers chopped wood to build strength in their hands. Floyd Patterson took an axe to camp at Kutsher's bu couldn't find trees to chop down then he broke his hand on Jackson's skull. The day Rocky Marciano retired, Mama Marciano met Jersey Joe Walcott in New York. They exchanged pleasantries. A few days later, the Rock's mother saw the Walcott fight films for the first time (she never saw her son in action).

Dismayed by the punishmen Jersey Joe was inflicting on Rocky, she shouted. "Sonamagun, why I shaka da hand wit' dat Joel Wells, Clemson halfback respected by rival coaches as the best in the south, will be married shortly which Isn't so unusual except that the bride-to-be, Jackie Furr, is a cheerleader at arch-rival South Carolina. When Walter Alston was still reticent, he was interviewed by a gai reporter who was beforehand by a Dodger official she'd have a tough time making him talk. When she emerged from Alston's office after a half hour, the official asked how she did. "Just fine," was the answer.

"I looked at the letters across the chest of his uniform and asked. 'What color are they, Mr. Alston? 'Royal he answered." 'The same color as you? eyes, and he just melted." Latest on the muddle of the golfing Bauers Marlene Is back in the good graces of Pop Bauer, and Alice is companionable with her younger sister, too but Bob Hagge, who married first one, then the other, is completely Ignored by Pop and Alice as he travels the circuit with Marlene. Between you'n'me, New York boxing commissioner Julius Helfand wasn't at all happy about Referee Harry Kessler's minority vote in the Jackson-Patterson duel so why should it be only the boxer who's liable to set down six months for a poor performance? Mick Parks One Out of Briggs; Number 25 By DAVE DILES DETROIT (AP) Detroit catcher Frank House, kept telling Mickey Mantle he'd never hit one out of the park with the strong wind blowing in. And the slugger is reminded constantly by Manager Casey Stengel and his coaches to quit swinging at bad balls.

If the New York Yankee strong boy had paid any attention at all, he would not propelled a "bad ball" out of Briggs Stadium yesterday. Only one ball ever traveled out of the stadium before the 24-year- old center ripped into one of Paul Foytack's fast balls and sent it into 15-mile-an-hou- wind and over the right center field stands. Hit from the left side of the plate the blast came with two men on base in the eighth inning and broke a 4-4 tie. The "ankees won 7-4. In 1939.

a rookie named Ted Williams cracked one over the stands down the line in right. Mantle's blast was much more imoressive. and much longer. House said Mnntle fast ball a little inside and up around his shoulders." Not Fit To Hit "It wasn't a fit pltcf to hit," he added. House chattered at Mantle every time the Yankee slugger came to bat.

Said House: "I kept telling him. 'Mickey, you ain't gonna hit one out of here today; that wind coming in from right field Is just too much for House said Mantle "muttered something, but I never could tell what'it was." Mantle failed to get a ball out of the infield in his first three trips. He grounded to first in the opening inning, struck out swinging in the third and popped to shortstop In the fifth. The home run was his 25th of the season and put him a dozen games ahead of Babe Ruth's pace when Ruth hit a record 60 for the Yankees.
