THE NEWS-COMET, EAST BERLIN, PA., MAY 31, 1946 PAGE FTVtB Y,S.GradsTold Of New Problems Using the words of Woodrow Wilson, "If a man has a white post, he must keep painting it and keep it up to date, or it will soon cease to be a white post," Dr. Harry F. Baughman, of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological seminary told the 17 graduates of York Springs high school Thursday, May 23, that the milestone which they have reached ·withVU-ejr graduation is an introduc- tioA to new responsibilites. Lake the former president, Dr. Baughman criticized what he said has been a tendency to glorify American heritages and past deeds without doing anything to transmit these heritages and apply them to the new age. "Having reached this milestone in your lives, you are required, net only to appreciate the American heritage, but to pass it on to posterity more shining and bright than ·when you received it," he continued. "You must first appreciate this her- ' itage yourselves, and the words of the Declaration of Independence, ·governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,' and its closing words, 'and for the support of this declaration, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.' You must remember the words of Lincoln: 'Government of the people, by the people and for the people.'" "It is important that you appreciate this sacred honor of America because it is now in peril from forces loose which would destroy it. You must give to the nation a spiritual life and a will to pass on these heritages undimmed, and brightened by your own example and service."
