DAILY, Secretary Metropolitan Park District Sept 10 17 24 Oct 1 F3W Failed Trumbull aircraft plant set for sale at sheriff's auction Associated Press WARREN Some time within the next few weeks, the empty, year-old Commuter Aircraft Corp. plant will be sold at a sheriff's auction, perhaps the largest foreclosure sale in Trumbull County history. The plant at the west edge of Youngstown Municipal Airport is the largest tangible evidence of a dreamed-of aircraft industry for the Mahoning Valley. Several attempts have been made to bring an aviation industry to the area since the steel industry began fading in recent years. The CAC factory was the largest effort, built in 1982 and 1983 with the help of a $10 million loan from 10 area banks, a $3.4 million federal grant and $1 million from private investors.

It was completed, but CAC failed to get enough orders to start production of a commuter airplane. CAC folded last fall, and backers began foreclosure proceedings. Last week, "Traffic was bad," said Capt. Russell Miller of the Ohio Highway Patrol in Berea. "It was backed up (Monday) all around Sandusky and Elyria and just east of Strongsville." Miller said he could not estimate how long some motorists may have waited. "Sometimes, the time gets away from you when you're waiting," he said. "You might wait 10 or 15 minutes and think it's an hour." from General Motors Corp.

and Wright Air Lines. Wright decided to stay at Cleveland, and GM backed out. But Gilbert Singerman, president of Wright and founder of Advanced Turbo, continued in recent months to express interest. McKay would neither confirm nor deny interest from American Skyships Industries, another firm which opened, then closed, an office in Youngstown. Skyship executives could not be reached for comment.

"If nothing happens, if all the banks wind up losing their money, it'll be a catastrophe," McKay said. "At the same time, if an employer comes in and jobs are created and we still lose money, is that success or isn't it? "We went into this with our eyes wide open. We knew the speculative nature of what we were doing. I'd far rather be accused of supporting a failed opportunity than not supporting one that could have made it." sfnior citizens' area, but are con-s dering a nursing home proposal. "We hope to break ground sometime in March," Burkett uaid, adding that if plans go well, the project could be completed in three years.

Though the shell of the shopping area alone would cost $2 million, Burkett had no cost estimate for the entire project nor one for how much financing would be sought. He said the proposed project site is triangular and would offer homes seclusion from the shopping area: "Over half of the land is wooded," he said, "and we'll try to save as many of the trees as possible." A meeting is scheduled Sept. 17 between the developers and the five-member Doylestown Planning Commission, which includes the mayor. If the commission approves a preliminary plan, public hearings will be scheduled. If rejected, developers could revise their I don't think we want a strip out there," Mayor Daniel said.

"We'd like to keep it as a residential area, but we realize we have to have commercial development. "We need tax monies coming in, the same as any other community." Daniel said merchants were not afraid of competition, but were concerned about having two separate retail areas. Officials said $40 million was spent on current projects. Work is being done on 70 bridges including the span over Brecksville Road in Richfield, the span across the Cuyahoga River Valley and the bridge over Tinker's Creek near Hudson. Construction has caused long delays in the Sandusky area near Cedar Point, but traffic flow has not been seriously interrupted in Summit County, Barnett said.

He said traffic around Sandusky may have been at its worst during Labor Day weekend. Traffic peaked that weekend last summer. which hold the first mortgage are expected to be high bidders at the sale, although their spokesman said he is hot responding to inquiries about the property until title is cleared. "We've stopped worrying about whether this group or that group will come up with the money to buy the plant," said Don McKay, president 6f Home Savings Loan of Youngstown, the leading lender among the 10 banks which foreclosed. "Once the plant is sold in foreclosure, we'll find out who is serious and who isn't," he said.

"There's a big difference between expressing interest in the plant and actually making a bona fide offer for it." He estimated there are 20 inquiries about the property from prospective buyers or tenants, but indicated not all are serious. Advanced Turbo Manufacturing showed interest early this year. It had a promise of $5 million from the state, and support are planning an octagonal shopping area about the size of two K-mart stores. The mall would be located about three-fourths of a mile from downtown. The area would contain seven to nine stores, with one major tenant taking about half the space.

Burkett said he could not yet name the primary tenant. "Doylestown doesn't really have a shopping center," he said. "Many people go to other communities to shop." Approval of city officials and financing must be secured before the project can proceed. Burkett said he and his partner have acquired 78 acres at Gates Street and Ohio 585 on the village's north side. Plans also call for condominiums, single-family homes and a park.

Developers had planned a ambulance chief's car there was no place to pull off the road. He said the cruiser's flashing lights were working. Police said the ambulance came over a rise in the road that blocked the view of the parked cruiser. QUE 1017 PRIGS! from 2 FER' Luxurious, Reclina-Rocker A proposed shopping and residential complex in Doylestown has the mayor wondering whether revenues from future shoppers will come at the expense of the village's downtown. Whether the proposed complex in northeastern Wayne County would hurt existing retailers "is the big question on everybody's mind," Doylestown Mayor Gene Daniel said.

He hoped the experience of nearby Wadsworth, which has a relatively new shopping center on the far north side of town, could be repeated in Doylestown. "In Wadsworth, the downtown stores are still occupied," Daniel said. "I'd hate to see our downtown stores boarded up," he added. David Burkett, who owns Home Remodeling in Akron, said he and his partner, Jeff Fuelling, Lawrence hits police Lawrence Township acting police chief Jim Whittington, who also is the township's fire chief, will be filling in a lot of accident report forms this week. Whittington had responded in a police cruiser to an accident call at 3:42 p.m.

Saturday when the fire department ambulance, also responding, slammed into him on Canal Fulton Road, 75 feet south of Lawrence Road, in the Village of Clinton. Miriam Bartolc, a member of the ambulance crew, was treated at Massillon Community Hospital for minor injuries. Driver of the ambulance, Gary L. Vardon, and crew members Gary Pratner and Paul Inghram were treated at the scene. Whittington was not injured.

Lawrence Township is in Stark County and Clinton is in Summit County. An Ohio Highway Patrol spokesman said the cruiser was parked on the roadway at the time of the crash. The accident is still under investigation. Whittington said he stopped in the right traffic lane at the scene of a motorcycle accident because A. Padded-arm contemporary -Styling.
