One of the things he referred to is the heroine's name in the Bond movie, "Goldfinger." A compromise was- effected by editing the scenes so that Bond calls her by her last. name in one and by her first in another scene. The full name had a connotation which turned NBC's Eastland into a mass of quivering jelly.

News News, Weather Feature Film Feature Film Only $975 Reg. $75 Value By HAL HUMPHREY HOLLYWOOD Apparently NBC wasn't aware that Sean Connery had the right to refuse doing the narration for "The Incredible World of James Bond," a TV special scheduled for airing on Nov. 26.

Well, he does, and he did, and that stuff hanging off the network's chin is egg. For more than three months NBC has been publicizing Connery as the narrator of the filmed show, which is supposed to be a pictorial examination into the James Bond svndrome affecting much of our populace. It wasn't until last week, however, that Connery got to see it. Afterward he said, "It Isn't what I expected," and exercised his right to bow out of the narration. SOMEBODY suggested David Niven, but he was in Switzerland and there wasn't time for producer Jack Haley Jr.

to go that far. So NBC and Haley settled on Alexander Scourby, who did it in New York over the weekend. Meanwhile, back on the Warner Bros, lot where Connery is currently involved as a Greenwich Village poet in a movie titled "A Fine Madness," the star of the Bond movies elaborated on his position. "I thought the show was to be like one I saw which dealt with the filming of John Huston's picture, 'Night of the but I found it was mostly clips from my four Bond movies," said Connery, who is trying to shake off the Bond Image. HE ALSO was irritated somewhat at being shown the film so late.

The excuse for this, according to producer Haley, was NBC's bureau of standards, which took an extra look at every foot of the film. "There are scenes in Bond movies," said bureau of standards man Richard Eastland, FOOTBALL SIIAUGHNESSY PLAY-OFF EAST VS. Eastland says he doesn't anticipate any trouble with the final distillation. Most of the hour Is com prised of what might be termed highlights of the four Bond movies, as Connery discovered.

These are "From Russia with Love," "Dr. No," "Goldfinger" and the yet to be released "Thunderball." About the only truly docu mentary touch will be a few feet of film on the late Ian Fleming, the author who created Agent 007 and his mad capers. OBVIOUSLY the narration had to be rewritten somewhat, now that Connery isn't doing it. Of course, he is far. from being divorced from the project, since his image as Bond will be on the TV screen a good part of the hour.

"Where would the Screen Actors Guild come into something like this?" Connery comments, in a reference to his being exposed and without any residual compensation. According to Buck Harris, spokesman for the SAG, there are times when actors have been paid for their appearance in film clips used in in stances such as this one, but all of the Bond movies were British productions, says Har ris, so his guild has no jurisdiction. "The Incredible World of James Bond" will pre-empt NBC's "Man From UNCLE" on Nov. 26, which may or may not be smart pre-empting. Na poleon Solo may look too tame after a shot of Bond.
