The fans even appeared to enjoy pitcher Billy O'Dell striking out four straight times. It was all part of the Pirates' 23 hits (tying Houston for the season high) and a 16-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirate fans.

haven't had much to shout about of late with only four victories in the last 10 games so one could hardly blame them if they sounded a bit blood thirsty. Gab Session Helps Their call for "more meetings" when Clemente collected three singles and Stargell a triple and two singles was in obvious reference to the session the players called among themselves after the Tuesday double loss to the New York Mets. 'Introducing Cal Ermer as the replacement for fired Twins' Manager Sam Mele, Friday night, Griffith said no one thing caused Mele's dismissal. "It's, rather an accumulation," he said.

The apparent split in the coaching staff last October that saw coaches Johnny Sain and Hal Naragon go to Detroit, Griffith said, was not the reason Mele was fired, but it was clear it contributed. Then, 25-game winner Jim fans, Kaat, in said an that open if letter were to Twins owner he would hire Sain as pitching coach and then get a manager who could take advantage of him. The Twins have been plagued by missed signs, inferior baserunning, and a lack of the "thinking baseball" this year. "At one time last year, Thad turned something around in mind things and we started winning," Griffith said. The last half of 1966, the Twins were the hottest team in baseball, steaming at a .643 clip after July 4.

Mele's record as a manager was good. Three- Tie For World Cage Crown MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (UPI)-A three-way tie exists in the World Basketball Championships today as winless Uruguay boosted the United States' chance for the title by upsetting Yugoslavia. The Americans, whose lone loss, was to Yugoslavia Thursday night, 73-72, were paced by Al Tucker's 20 points and Mike Silliman's 17 points Friday night.
