To see what's hot and what's not, consider the 20 most popular shows from the recently completed TV season: (1) "60 Minutes," (2) "Three's Company," (3) "That's Incredible," (4) "M-A-S-H," (5) "Alice," (8) "Dallas," (7) "Flo," (8) "The Jeffersons," (9) "The Dukes of Hazzard," (10) "One Day at a Time," (11) "Archie Bunker's Place," (12) "Eight is Enough," (13) "Taxi," (14) "House Calls," (15) "Real People," (16) "Little House on the Prairie," (17) "Happy Days," (18) "CHiPs," (19) "Trapper John, M.D.," (20) "Barney Miller." If I owned an acne medication company, I'd buy commercial time on only six of those shows: "Three's Company," with its sexed-up scripts; "Dukes of Hazzard," which stars a Dodge Charger; "Happy Days," where the Fonz is king; "CHiPs," with its roaring motorcycles and sunny scenes; and "Real People" and "That's Incredible," which, being freak shows, are sure to appeal to kids.

Of the lot, only "Dukes" is on CBS. On the other hand, the most mature of the top 20 consists of "CO Minutes," "M-A-S-H," "Alice," "Dallas," "Archie Bunker's Place," "One Day at a Time," "Taxi," "Trapper John, M.D." and "Barney Miller." All are well written, deal with predominantly adult situations and are clearly pitched to viewers 25 or older. These shows sustain themselves through dialogue rather than tight sweaters and fast cars. Of this group, only "Taxi" and "Barney Miller" are not CBS shows. A couple of other fine, multidimensional CBS shows had good seasons "WKRP in Cincinnati" finished 22d and "Lou Grant" was 36th.

Both are produced by one of television's classiest production companies, MTM Enterprises, which used to produce the wonderful "Mary Tyler Moore Show." All this does not mean we're never going to see another Jiggle show. Nor does it mean that all CBS hits are good and all youth-oriented shows are bad. What It means is that the emphasis of programming is going to shift. During ABC's heyday, the prevailing philosophy held that kids were in control of the nation's TV knobs and therefore the thing to do was trap them with adolescent shows. CBS has shown that shows that score above 9th grade on the California achievement tests can win big on national television.

With luck, the trend will continue for years. EDITOR'S NOTE: Ron Alrldge Is substituting for Gary Deeb, who is on vacation. By RON ALRIDGE The era of teenybopper TV appears to be ending, Series that are more sophisticated, more grown-i up, have made a comeback. I Proof is as close as CBS's stunning upset victory over ABC in the 1979-80 prime-time ratings race. CBS won with a lineup clearly aimed at a more mature viewing audience.

The strategy broke sharp- ly with the once-invincible ABC approach, which worshiped youth. i Where ABC stole CBS's crown three seasons ago on the strength of programs such as "The Six Million Dollar Man," "The Bionic Woman," "Welcome Back, Kottcr" and "Donny Marie," CBS now has won with the likes of "60 Minutes," "M-A-S-H" and "Archie Bunker's Place." The reason appears to be a combination of age and boredom. The television audience, like the country in gener-f al, is getting older. Ten years ago, the median age was 25; now it's 30. Presumably, a more mature au-! dlence prefers more mature TV shows.

Meanwhile, one advertising agency researcher theorizes that ABC's young viewers, being young, have grown bored with the network's old hits and are now turning to CBS, where older viewers have been watching all along. Don't get me wrong, youth-oriented programming Isn't entirely dead. "Three's Company," which spe-l cializes in Junior-high sex, did very well In the 1979-80 season. "Happy Days," though no longer In the top 10, finished 17th. t.

It's Just that the programming that won for CBS tended to have more substance, fewer gimmicks and a more adult tone than those once-hot ABC hits.
