neno uamte-jom mu rreuiiraua.y, may iskm Pratfall show tops Nielsens, CBS wins week TV networks show some real movies There's something strange coming to the TV networks this season: LOS ANGELES (AP) "Life's Most Embarrassing Moments," an ABC special showing of film clips of public pratfalls, was the top-rated show, but CBS won the Nielsen ratings for the week ended May 1. Close behind in second place was the first episode of a two-part NBC movie about the takeover of Earth by aliens from another planet. John Ritter was host of the ABC special, which fea tured clips of the embarrassing moments of personalities in news, sports, politics, movies and television. A similar special, NBC's "TV's Censored Bloopers IV," also made it to the Top 10, placing ninth. is a pilot for a projected NBC series about resistance fighters combating an alien invasion.

Indications from the Monday overnight ratings were that the concluding chapter could do even better in next week's ratings. CBS won the week in the ratings compiled by the A.C. Nielsen Co. with an overall rating of 16.0. ABC was second with 15.1 and NBC was third with 14.7.

The networks say this means that in an average prime-time minute 16 percent of the homes with television were tuned to CBS. CBS' weekly victory came during the opening salvo in the May "sweeps," when both Nielsen and Arbi-tron make more detailed surveys to determine the advertising rates for local TV stations. The May sweeps technically began April 27. In the ratings for the sweeps period, April 27-May 1, CBS was first in the Nielsens with 17.7, NBC was second with 14.8 and ABC third with 13.4. For the Arbitrons, CBS was first with 17.0, NBC second with 14.9 and ABC third with 14.5.

It was also CBS' first triumph in three weeks after two straight victories by ABC. Here are the Top 20: "Life's Most Embarrassing Moments," a 28.0 rating or 23.3 million households, ABC. These aren't the dinky made-for-TV kind, where budgets are small and athletes are always dying in their prime.

These are the sort that were made for real movie theaters. During the next two weeks, the networks will give us Burt and Marlon and two views of Clint, one mean and one mellow. They'll give us "Urban Cowboy" and "The and "Incredible Shrinking Woman" and more. And that will be a big change-of-pace. There was a time when the real movies called "theatricals" were dynamite in the ratings.

But then came HBO and other pay-TV services; for the networks, movies became third-hand goods. The extreme came this season, when ABC showed the much-loved "Kramer vs. Kramer." It finished only No. 11 for the week. So the networks have been ducking theatricals.

They've had fewer movie slots and more made-for-TV films. But now comes an exception. This is a "sweeps" month, a time when ratings are vital. The networks are run- ning out of non-reruns, so they're loading up with theatricals. You'll find some of the big-name films particularly "Rough Cut" and "Bronco Billy" and "Legend of Lone Ranger" disappointing.

But some of the smaller ones particularly "Time After Time" are downright delightful. Here's a round-up: FRIDAY: "The Shining." This classy horror film was fascinating on the big screen, blessed by Stanley Kubrick's immaculate camerawork and Jack Nicholson's brilliant performance. On TV, however, you may find it long and slow. ABC. SATURDAY: "Time After Time." Imagine that H.G.

Wells' time machine is real. Imagine that he uses it to pursue Jack the Ripper in modern-day San Francisco. Now imagine the potential for humor and excitement. The resulting film, by Nicholas Meyer, is funny, fascinating and scary. CBS.

SUNDAY: "Bronco Billy" was a well-meaning failure by Clint Eas-twood. This was a thoughtful film, about a wild-West show filled with second-hand dreams. But it's so dull that it died at the box office. CBS. And "Little Darlings" is a sorry concoction.

The movie version was raunchy and dumb, blessed only by Kristy McNichol's superb performance. For TV, the plot's been changed and even Kristy's work may be lost. NBC. Don't worry, though. On the same night, ABC has "Apocalypse Now," the Francis Coppola film that won top prize in the Cannes Film Festival.

It will lose something on the small screen, but Coppola and Marlon Brando always fascinate. TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, MAY 10-11: CBS offers something different.
