(AP) When Joseph Campbell received a telephone call that he and his wife had won $300,000 in the Illinois State Lottery, he wasn't all that happy.

"I hung up. I thought it was a joke," the 53-year-old Campbell said. But it wasn't, and another call convinced him that his wife, Dorothy, had drawn the winning ticket. The Campbells are both disabled and have lived on Sociai Security for the last 10 years in a two-bedroom frame house in this St. Louis suburb.

Campbell, a former aircraft company employe, was disabled about 13 years ago. His 57-year-old wife, a bookkeeper, was disabled about 10 years ago. One of their two sons teaches school here and the other is a recent graduate of the University of Rochester. But the last telethon also came in the midst of an, election year and congressional hearings on impeachment proceedings against then-President Richard M. Nixon.

Nonetheless, the Democrats hope to at least equal last year's total this weekend. Democratic national chairman Richard Strauss says the party is determined to pay off its $2.6 million debt. Some 100 entertainers and 50 politicians are here to join in the party's appeal, ex greatest stars features gold leaf ceilings, -14-inch-thick walls, a hanging oak staircase and 26 bathrooms. When it was completed in 1929, Lloyd hosted a star-studded housewarming party which lasted all weekend.

The estate, dubbed "Greenacres," soon became the playground of such stars as Mary Pick-ford, Buddy Rogers, Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin. The grounds were a separate spectacle featuring: Seven formal gardens, 12 fountains, tennis courts, waterfalls, a canoe course and an Olympic size swimming pool with a mammoth bathhouse. One garden is filled with tollhouses which are completely livable. But in 1940, Lloyd complained bitterly about taxes which he said were making "the maintenance of this kind of place a headache and perennial nightmare." involved and contribute to the party of thir BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) One of the last lavish mementos of Hollywood's Golden Age goes up for sale Sunday, and auctioneers estimate fewer than 100 people in the world could afford to buy it.

Just to get in on the bidding for the opulent Harold Lloyd Estate a potential buyer must deposit a $250,000 letter of credit. Harold Lloyd, the late silent screen comedian, built the rambling showplace in the 1920s for $2 million. It was more elegant than even the legendary Pickfair of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. By the 1940s, Lloyd estimated it was costing him $50,000 a month for upkeep. No one is estimating how much the place is worth now, but sales terms laid down by the Harold Lloyd Foundation give some hint.

Cash will be accepted or a $700,000 down payment with the balance financed. "I doubt that there are 100 people in the world who could afford to buy it," said one of the auctioneers who declined to reveal how many bidders had signed up. "I just hope that whoever buys it doesn't tear down the house," said a spokesman for the sellers. "It's such a beautiful place. The house is a 44-room Italian Renaissance mansion set in the midst of 16 very valuable acres of residential property.
