B20 Asbury Park Sept. 21, 1983 ABC keeps place atop survey THE FAMILY CIRCUS, By Bil Keane Television Nielsen ratings Wednesday prime time (See listings for details) The Associated Press LOS ANGELES The lighthearted action-adventure show "Hardcastle McCormick" grabbed first place in the weekly A.C. Nielsen Co. ratings in a spectacular premiere, carrying ABC to its second victory in a row. "Hardcastle McCormick," which made its debut in a two-hour movie, finished five full ratings points ahead of its nearest rival.

It helped give ABC its first Sunday victory in non-special programming since October 1980. The show, which stars Brian Keith and Daniel Hugh Kelly as an unlikely duo fighting crime, became the sixth highest-rated premiere since 1970. Its creator is Stephen J. Cannell, who also created NBC's "The A-Team," which was in fourth place. It was the first time since May that ABC has won two weeks in a row.

Last week the network was helped by the return of Monday night NFL pro football. The football match was first last week, but this week's game between the San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs was in 24th place. The official start of the fall season doesn't come until Sept. 26, the day after the telecast of the Emmy Awards, but the three networks already have begun sneak previews of their new and returning shows. ABC won the ratings for the week ended Sept.

CBS was second with 14.0 and NBC was third with 13.8. The networks say this means that in an average prime-time minute, 16.2 percent of the nation's homes with television were tuned to ABC. Tied for second were the season premiere of CBS' "60 Minutes" and an original ABC special, "Life's Most Embarrassing Moments II." The CBS NFL Football Post Game Show was in fifth place, and NBC's telecast of the Miss America Pageant was sixth. Completing the Top 10 were ABC's "Three's Company," seventh, CBS' "Simon Simon," eighth, and CBS' "Magnum, P.L" and ABC's "9 to 5," tied for ninth place. Another ABC premiere, "Webster," was 11th.

ABC's "Matt Houston," which made its season debut the week before, was 20th. ABC's "Benson" made its season premiere in 28th place. NBC's "All-Star Hour," was in 18th place. Less fortunate was the debut of NBC's "First Camera," a revamp of its magazine show "Monitor," which network has placed opposite CBS' "60 Minutes." "First Camera" finished dead last in 65th place. NBC's "We Got It Made," which made its debut last week in second place dropped to No.

21. "Real People," making its season debut, was in 33rd place. The final episode of ABC's "Two Marriages" was 35th. It was the highest-rated of all the network summer shows and the network has ordered new scripts developed. The five lowest-rated shows in descending order were a special showing of NBC's "Diff'rent Strokes," the CBS movie "Senior NBC's "First Annual Yummy Awards," the NBC movie "Young Frankenstein," and the debut of NBC's "First Camera." "The CBS Evening News With Dan Rather" was once again the highest-rated news show.

NBC, in third place last week, moved ahead of ABC to take second place. ABC slipped into third place. The ratings: CBS 12.6, NBC 9.8, ABC 8.8. Ratings are based on percentage and actual number of homes (in millions) viewing each program.
