21. The drama, which stars Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as two police buddies, has done considerably better in the ratings since CBS decided not to renew it for the fall season. This was its first time in first place, but the series has been in the Top 10 four other times this summer. It finished second for the week ended July 3. There is little chance the improved ratings will change the network's mind about reviving the show, but producer Barney Rosenzweig has been exploring the possibility of making a "Cagney Lacey" feature film.

"Cagney Lacey's" surge to the top carried CBS to its third straight victory in the A.C. Nielsen Co. ratings. In all, the network had six shows in the Top 10, which was increased to 11 because of a tenth-place tie. Second-place NBC had three shows and third-place ABC had two shows in the Top 10.

CBS won the weekly ratings with an average of 13.0. NBC was second with 12.5 and ABC was third with 12.0. The networks say this means that in an average prime time minute, 13.0 percent of the nation's television homes were tuned to CBS. i NBC's "Buffalo Bill," a summer show that started strong, then fell in the ratings, resurfaced in the Top 20 this past week tying for 17th place. The show finished 28th the previous week.
