PAUL, Nov. from the northern division of the United States that ducks are more plentiful this year than for many years vindicates "drastic" methods in effect for the past two years, the U.

S. Biological survey feels. Criticized when certain laws were enacted intended to save or increase several fast-disappearing species of ducks, the biological survey now looks upon its conservation plan as a success. The 30-day open season, for each of the three sections of the coun- duck stamp tax, proceeds from which have been used for the development of breeding grounds, limiting of repeating shotguns to three shells, and the ban on cer- ain species of waterfowl already show appreciable results in the southern flight, survey reports indicate. Again this year there are three zones--the northern, intermediate, and southern.

In the northern zone ihe season was Oct. 9-Nov. in the intermediate zone, from Nov. 27-Dec. 26.

In all zones there are nine types of water fowl the banned list--those- receiving protection because of their scarcity. They are the wood, buf- filehead, canvasback and red-head duck, and Crane, swan, Ross' goose, goose and brant. The latter are banned'only, along the Atlantic ocean. Identification of those ducks banned is one of the major of the hunter. Wood ducks, eanvasbacks and redheads on the male side all haw red-heads.

Other tips: if a hunter has his gun on what he thinks is a mallard hen, it's probably a female "canvasback. They look so much alike. Some local identifications might cross a hunter. The survey advises not to shoot a butterball, or dipper duck, because it's really buffie- head. A can, canvas, or whiteback is a canvasback.

The redhead Is sometimes called a fiddler or redneck. And the ruddy duck goes under the colloquial aliases of stiff and greaser.
