I suspect in Europe they I are developing conductors, but few 5. of them want to live in America, because of the lifestyle and better pay in Europe. "Pittsburgh still has the reputa-k tion of being an ugly city. Previn and his supporters don't realize this is a tough industrial town. This is the site of the Homestead massacre.

U.S. Steel is letting whole steel towns die in the Mon Valley. They 1 don't care about Previn's feelings. 5 "A recent survey showed Pitts- burgh is number 22 on the list of most desirable cities in which to live. A world-class orchestra won't make up for that.

Masses of people are not concerned about the prestige I of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Previn is a man of very great gifts, but I am not sure he is using his gifts wisely." This is the third time Previn has quit a symphony orchestra amid controversy. In 1969, the four-time Academy Award winner quit the Houston Symphony after a two-year tenure because he and the board were at odds. From 1968 to 1979, he headed the London Symphony. In 1975, the orchestra manager tried to fire Previn, but failed.

Previn eventually left, and in a recent book, "Maestro," the vice chairman of the London Symphony, Kurt Hans Goedicke, said of the Previn years: "We were not able to attract the services of this or that eminent conductor because there was already a tint to us that had developed over the years. And we had also missed out on a substan-; tial chunk of repertoire that no symphony orchestra that regards itself as truly international can do without." Previn also came under fire here for his limited repertoire. When he arrived in 1976, the response was so great the orchestra added a Thursday night concert. All concerts Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the late '70s were sold out by season tickets. But last year, attendance fell and subscriptions were down to the 80 percent mark.

Downtown construction and the poor local economy had something to do with failing attendance, but when The Press ran a survey on why season subscribers did not renew, about 100 letters came in. Most were from couples, or 150 ticket-holders, and there was a heavy sprinkling of anti-Previn sentiment. Many objected to his sporty attire at concerts; many more objected to his programming. G. Christian Lantzsch, president of the Pittsburgh Symphony Society, had insisted there was no rift be- Marshall Turkin says his relationship with Andre Previn "was productive" tion of the orchestra as one of the world's great music ensembles." Principal oboist Elden Gatwood also said he "had heard a lot of rumors and suspected he was leaving.

He led us on a couple of spectacular sets of tours in Europe, the best playing I have ever heard from this orchestra, including the days with Steinberg." (Carl Apone is Press music tween Previn and Turkin, and last week denied reports the board had sought to fire Turkin. In a statement yesterday, Lantzsch said the board wished Previn "success" in his new post. He said Pittsburgh was fortunate to have had Previn since 1976 and said he had "carried on in the grand tradition of his eminent predecessors, Steinberg and Reiner. Violinist David Gillis, chairman of the important orchestra commit tee, praised Previn's work here and "helping put Pittsburgh back on the musical map." He expressed confidence the board will find a music director who "will continue to make this a world-class orchestra." Oboist Tom Fay, former chairman of the orchestra committee, said he began "to suspect something was going to happen many months ago. We shall always be grateful to Previn for expanding our musical progress and enhancing the reputa 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices 001 Death Notices dren: and IS areat-orand Campbell and Miss Marcia K0NESKY Elizabeth Duman, Robert Paul J.
