Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Monday, December 29, 1986 Page 9 Reagans Honor Voyager Crew; Head To Palm Springs LOS ANGELES (UPI) President and Mrs. Reagan are emerging briefly from their holiday seclusion to honor two of America's newest heroes and then head off to the desert to ring in the new year with friends and political allies. The Reagans, in the second day of a weeklong vacation, scheduled a mid-afternoon departure today, trading urban Los Angeles for the desert bloom of Palm Springs. There they will greet the new year as they have for the past two decades: in the company of friends at a black-tie bash held at the sprawling estate of publishing magnate Walter Annenberg. Before their departure, the Reagans were to be in the limelight just long enough to salute the crew of the experimental Voyager aircraft, which last week completed a nine-day, nonstop flight around Sale Calendar Dec.

Dick Rutan, 48, a retired Air Force pilot who flew 325 combat missions in Vietnam, and Yeager, 34, an aviation engineer who began flying in 1978, flew their craft at an average speed of 115 mph, writing a successful conclusion to a quest begun in 1981 by Rutan and his brother. Burt Rutan, an aircraft designer for the past decade and brother of one of Voyager's pilots, perfected the craft's radical design, which used a long wingspan and lightweight construction to stay aloft for nine days on its 9,750 gallons of fuel. Reagan praised the Voyager crew last week for a heroic journey that captured the imagination of a nation. The ceremony was an opportunity for Reagan to maintain his position that the Iran arms- Contra aid affair has not preoccupied his presidency, as he has said several times. To reinforce that notion, the White House said Reagan spent part of Sunday working Ion his 1987 State of the Union address and watching the NFL playoff games.

The Reagans also set aside time to see their children, although no details were provided. Some friends who will attend the New Year's Eve bash are the same who have been reportedly pushing Reagan for a White; House shake-up which could; include dismissing key aides. Iraqi Air Hijack Death Toll Makes It Bloodiest In History United Press International The death toll rose to 67, including two terrorists, in the botched Christmas Day hijacking of an Iraqi Air flight from Bagdhad to Jordan making it history's bloodiest conclusion to a hijacking. The state-owned Iraqi News Agency said Sunday at least 67 people were killed in Thursday's shoot-out, crash and explosion in the Saudi Arabian desert near a small airport in Arar on the Iraqi border, 250 miles southwest of Baghdad. No motive was given for the attempt to hijack the Boeing 737, which was on a routine flight from Baghdad to Amman.

Earlier reports said between 59 and 62 people were killed in the hijacking. But the Paris-based private Lebanese Radio Monte Carlo quoted the Iraqi News Agency as listing the names of 67 victims, including 23 Iraqis, 22 Sudanese, 14 Egyptians, two Jordanians, two Iranians, two Palestinians with Jordanian passports and the two hijackers. The radio said the news agency also identified the two hijackers as "Ziad Hanna Al Asmar and Elia Georgos Hanna, both holding Lebanese passports." Survivors reported a third hijacker was wounded but taken alive by security agents. The previous high death toll was 60 people killed Nov. 24, 1985, when Palestinians hijacked an Athens-to-Cairo EgyptAir flight with 97 people aboard to Malta.

The terrorists killed two passengers before Egyptian commandos stormed the plane and the hijackers returned grenade and gunfire, killing another 58 people. Also Sunday in Lebanon, the Islamic Jihad released a photo of American hostage Terry Anderson and a warning not to blame it for the hijacking. "We deny reports that Islamic Jihad was behind the hijacking of the Iraqi plane," the group said in the typewritten statement delivered to an international news agency office in Moslem west Beirut. "We warn the media that from now on any news agency which publishes statements without proof will bear unmerciful reaction," the Islamic Jihad said. The statement was accompanied by a black- and-white photograph of Anderson, a Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, who was kidnapped by three gunmen March 16, 1985.

Anderson appeared wearing a striped shirt. The Islamic Jihad also holds American Donald Sutherland, 54, and Frenchmen Marcel Carton, 62, Marcel Fontaine, 43, and John Paul Kaufmann, 43. A telephone caller purporting to speak on behalf of the Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility last Thursday for the hijacking of the Iraqi plane, which crash-landed in Saudi Arabia following an in-flight gun battle between the terrorists and Iraqi security guards. Vanunu Pleads Innocent To Treason JERUSALEM (UPI) Mordechai Vanunu, a nuclear arms technician who allegedly gave details of Israel's atomic arsenal to a London newspaper, "denied all the facts" presented by the government in court and pleaded innocent to charges of treason. Vanunu, who has said he was captured by Israeli agents in Europe and brought back to Israeli for prosecution, pleaded not guilty to the charges of treason and espionage at a 90-minute hearing Sunday in Jerusalem District Court.

"He denied all the facts in the charge sheet," said his lawyer, Amnon Zichroni. The Moroccan-born Jew allegedly told The Sunday Times newspaper in an article published Sept. 30 that Israel stockpiled atom bombs for 20 years and possessed the world's sixth largest nuclear arsenal. Vanunu disappeared mysteriously in London five days before the British newspaper printed his story, leading to reports he was kidnapped by members of Mossad, the Israeli secret service. At a custody hearing last week, Vanunu, in a message written on the palm of his hand, said he was abducted in Rome by Mossad agents and spirited back to Israel for prosecution.

He was brought to the court Sunday under heavy armed escort in a van with its windows covered with white paint. A policeman held a burlap sack over his face and pulled a red umbrella low for extra protection to prevent Vanunu giving any messages to a crowd of some 60 reporters staking out the court. In London, the Sunday Times said he was lured from hiding in a London hotel by an American woman, identified only as Cindy, before being spirited out of Italy and back to Israel by Mossad agents. The Israeli government, responding to repeated inquiries about his whereabouts, said Nov. 9 that Vanunu was in Israel.

It has not responded to Vanunu's claim or the Sunday Times newspaper report. Israel has assured London that no British laws were broken but, since Vanunu's claims last week, it now faces demands from Italy for an explanation. Italy has ordered an investigation in to the case. Vanunu faces life or 55 years imprisonment if convicted because the prosecution decided not to press for the death penalty. The trial will resume in six weeks and Israeli officials have refused to release details of the charges.

The trial will not establish whether Israel does have a nuclear arsenal. Israeli law maintains someone can be guilty of treason or espionage even if the information concerned was misleading or wrong. Vanunu worked for 10 years at Israel's secret nuclear facility at Dimona in the Negev Desert before being laid off in a cost-cutting measure in November 1985. He then left the country. Newspaper reports say he is being held in an isolation cell and is allowed access only to his laywer and family.

Israel radio also said Vanunu has asked for the return of personal possessions, taken from him as punishment for his passing information to journalists. Mystery Writer MacDonald Dies MILWAUKEE (UPI) Mystery writer John D. MacDonald, whose eccentric salvage expert-private eye Travis McGee cracked cases full of adventure and beautiful women in 21 best-selling novels, has died of complications from heart surgery. He was 70. MacDonald had been in a coma since Dec.

10 and died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital with his family at his side, hospital spokeswoman Karen Bergman said. He had come to the hospital from his home in Sarasota, because his doctor there recommended a doctor at St. Mary's. He left behind one unpublished Travis McGee book, the 22nd in a series that sold 30 million copies in the United States, in which McGee dies.

MacDonald told the Fort Lauderdale, News Sun-Sentinel in 1984 the book was to be published after his death. "When he dies, there won't be many people around who will mourn him," MacDonald said of the McGee character. "Oh, there will.be some who will be grateful to him for his help but he will end up unmourned, un- honored, unsung." But the author will be mourned by millions of readers, many of whom rushed to bookstores at news of the release of each new novel. MacDonald wrote nearly 80 books in all, with the McGee John D. MacDonald series coming in the second half of his career.

"He was a wonderful writer and a wonderful man and I think a great loss to the world of readers and to his friends," said Leona Nevler, MacDonald's editor and friend. MacDonald was born July 24, 1916, in Sharon, Pa. He attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Business School, but was smitten by the writing bug in 1942 while a soldier stationed in the China- Burma-India theater during World War II, His first novel, "The Brass Cupcake," was published in 1950 and sold 1.5 million copies, said Claire Ferraro, associate publisher at Ballantine, Del Rey and Fawcett books in New York. MacDonald created the Travis McGee character, who he once described as a "knight in slightly tarnished armor a thinking man's Robin Hood," in 1964 in "The Deep Blue Good-By," which came after he already had written 43 other books. The wisecracking McGee is a vulnerable tough guy who lives in Fort Lauderdale on a houseboat named the Busted Flush, which he won in a poker game.

He makes a living as a "salvage expert," helping retrieve stolen valuables in return for half their worth, and engages in daring adventures involving lovely women and generally sophisicated villains. Almost every one of the McGee books, all of them with the name of a color in the title, were bestsellers, Ferraro said, and several were turned into movies. One of MacDonald's novels, "The Excuse," was made into the movie "Cape Fear." Last year's film, "A Flash of Green," also was based on one of his books..
