-4B a Ml. ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 1995 State Converting Convent To Prison Corrections Officials Struggle To House Daily Influx Of Inmates Death Of Gymnast, 22, Triggers Lessons About Eating Disorders RAYTOWN, Mo. (AP) Friends and family members who watched world-class gymnast Christy Hen-rich waste away to 60 pounds have established a foundation to teach others that eating disorders can be deadly. "The Christy Henrich message is very powerful," said Ralph Monaco, a co-founder of the Christy Hen-rich Foundation and the Henrich family attorney.

"There is so much emotion about a young life being lost. If we can help one McReynolds, a local eating disorder specialist, told health classes at the suburban Kansas City school. "This isn't something you play with for a week." Nearly 350 boys and girls at the school took part in the program. The foundation hopes eventually to offer such programs to schools nationwide. Humana Health Care Plans-Health Midwest and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City were co-sponsors of the initial presentation.

Mary Fulton, adminis JEFFERSON CITY (AP) A former convent in Maryville will become a minimum security prison as Missouri corrections officials continue looking for places to house convicts in the crowded penal system. Prisoners are "coming in on longer sentences and for more serious crimes," Corrections Director Dora Schriro said Friday. The new prison will house 525 inmates. First, the former Mount Al-vemo convent must be converted at an estimated cost of $9.4 million, of which the Legislature has approved $552,166. Schriro said the first 325 inmates would arrive in March 1996.

The rest will be housed there by September 1996. She said the new prison will house first-time, non-violent offenders serving sentences of about six months. While in prison, they are to participate in programs for drug abuse and to get high school educations. The new prison was announced as corrections officials look for ways of dealing with nearly 18,000 inmates in 16 prisons and two community release centers. Missouri prisons are far over capacity, and the number of convicts is growing daily.

Since January, there has been a net gain of 600 convicts, with the state averaging eight new inmates a day. Corrections officials also plan to expand the Tipton Treatment Center in central Missouri to house 800 more inmates by next January. It now has 292 prisoners. Also, the Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center, with 990 inmates, will be expanded by October to house an additional 200 prisons. Already proceeding are plans to build a women's prison at Vandalia to replace the Renz Correctional Facility near Jefferson City, which was destroyed by 1993 Missouri River flooding.

Construction is to start this spring. Gov. Mel Carnahan has asked lawmakers to approve $188 million in the next state budget to help finance an reception and diagnostic center and a maximum-security prison. child, we've been successful." The next year, Henrich placed fourth at the World Championships on the uneven parallel bars. She retired from elite gymnastics in 1991.

Behind the scenes, Henrich had become obsessed with her weight. She sought treatment for eating disorders but weighed only 60 pounds when she died in July at age 22. The nonprofit foundation was established in September. In the first pilot project launched by the foundation, students at Raytown South Middle School got a lesson Thursday about the dangers of anorexia nervosa and bulimia, and Henrich's struggle with them. "This is a disease you can die from," Nancy disorders.

"But it goes a lot deeper than that it's a problem of self-esteem," she said. Students watched quietly Thursday as the program began with a music video highlighting Henrich's career, recorded by Henrich's fiance, Bo Moreno. "At one point Christy weighed 42 pounds," Moreno told the students afterward. "This is coming from a girl who was healthy and vibrant." Henrich's mother, Sandy Henrich, was among the last to speak. "It's really been hard for us," she said.

"Christy was bigger than life. She was my best friend. If you know of someone with a problem, ask for help." OWENSVILLE, Mo. (AP) Three bodies, one apparently with a gunshot wound, were discovered Friday at the scene of a mobile home fire, authorities said. The body of a man with the apparent wound was found in the yard just outside the mobile home, and the bodies of a man and a woman were found inside, said David Huxel, a par-ademic with the Owensville Area Ambulance District.

Names of the dead weren't imme diately available. Police and fire crews, who got a report of the fire just after 2 p.m., remained on the scene early Friday evening. The Gasconade County sheriff's office confirmed the deaths, dispatcher said Sheriff Bob Mathis had no immediate comment on how the three died. The mobile home and an attached garage were heavily damaged by fire, and two outbuildings some distance away on the same property also burned, Huxei said. "We're unsure of the causes of death, but the consensus at the scene was that it was rather suspicious," Huxel said.

The mobile home was just south of the city limits of Owensville, Huxel said. Owensville is about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis. Jury Awards $1.35 Million To Widow In Malpractice Suit FUNERAL NOTICES By William C. Lhotka Of the Post-Dispatch Staff A jury in St.

Louis County Circuit Court has awarded the widow, children and parents of Donald Hewlett $1.35 million in a medical malpractice suit against two doctors and De-Paul Health Center in Bridgeton. Hewlett died at DePaul on Jan. 27, 1987, at age 47 of complications following an operation, said the family's attorney, Stephen H. Ringkamp of the Hullverson law firm. After a three-week trial, the jury Friday found negligence on the part of.

Drs. Henry Lattinville and Stanley Biel. Shirley Hewlett, the widow from St. Charles, will get 70 percent of the verdict after legal fees. Her two daughters and son will get 9 percent each; and Donald Hewlett's parents 3 percent.

The jury found Lattinville, a neurological surgeon, 50 percent at fault. Biel, a cardiologist, was found 45 percent at fault, the hospital 5 percent. Lattinville operated on a nerve in Hewlett's head in January 1987. Hewlett had a prior heart ailment. Biel was to regulate anticoagulant medication after the surgery, Ringkamp said.

The surgery was successful, but a day later Hewlett's condition worsened, the suit said. The next day, Hewlett was comatose. Two days later, he was dead. Lattinville and Biel denied negligence. SCHABER, MILLAN Q.
