Living Today The Salina Journal Thursday, December 8, 1983 Page 6 Mixed feelings surround marriages Dear Friends: A writer who sign- rd herself "Heartsick" has a daughter who is in love with a young man she and her husband detest. She asked me how such marriages turn out. I went to my best source the readers and was inundated with emotionally charged responses. Here are as many as space permits: Dear Ann Landers: My parents were dead set against my marriage to because she was my first cousin. They said our children would be morons.

We married anyway and produced three Phi Beta Kappas one a Fulbright scholar. CT Fans Dear CT: How lovely! And lucky, too, that there were no inheritable diseases on both sides of the family. First cousins who do wish to marry should get genetic counseling and make sure such a marriage is legal in their state. Dear Ann Landers: I passed up three chances to marry because my mother didn't think any man was good enough for me. At 43, I am Ann Landers FIELD ENTERPRISES vice president of a company and lonely as hell.

Too bad I didn't follow my heart and tell my mother to butt out. Chicago Dear Ann Landers: My parents are dead-set against Mike. He was Irish Catholic, lived on the wrong side of the tracks and had one suit of clothes to his name. My two sisters are now divorced from their fancy WASP husbands. Mike and I have five great kids, a solid marriage and my folks love him like crazy.

Pittsburgh Dear Ann Landers: Mother was a widow, 19 years older than I. She was violently opposed to my marriage to Don and succeeded in breaking us up. The following year, she married him herself. If there is a God in heaven, she will burn in hell. Bitter Dear Ann Landers: My beautiful 21-year-old daughter is following in my footsteps.

She has fallen for a handsome, charming, no-good bum like her father. But I shall not make the same mistake my mother made. I'm keeping my mouth shut. I'll bet she dumps him within six months. Santa Monica, Calif.

Dear Ann Landers: My advice to any girl whose folks have strong objections to the man of her choice give it one year. Don't defy them to prove you are independent. Thank the Lord my minister talked me into waiting. After eight months I knew Joe wasn't right for me. Two years later I married a man who was.

Lucky In Oregon Dear Ann Landers: His folks hated me. My folks hated him. All that hate kept us together. It was us against the world. We ran off eight years ago.

We now have three kids and our marriage stinks. Birmingham Dear Ann Landers: Dad, who was 5 feet, 5 inches, loathed Tom because he was 6 feet, 6 inches. (Called him "The One night the house caught fire and "The Gorilla" saved both my parents and my handicapped brother. Today, 10 years later, we all live together and get along great. Steubenville Dear Let your daughter choose her own husband.

If he's the wrong one, it will be her mistake. I'm a mother who interfered and am no longer welcome in their home. There is no hell like being written off by an only child. Utah Regrets Dear Ann Landers: Mary's father offered me $10,000 to leave town and forget about his daughter. I refused and we were married by a justice of the peace.

She is a spoiled brat, a daddy's girl and a pain in the tail. I wish I had taken the money and scrammed. San Juan, P.R. Baby named A son, Erik Christopher, was born Nov. 23 to Mr.

and Mrs. John R. Peterson, Rt. 2, Lindsborg. Grandparents are Mr.

You had printed a hint about cleaning water stains out of dishwashers and it worked perfectly. I have lost my copy which I had clipped out of my newspaper and am desperate to have the inside of my dishwasher bright and shiny. Could you please rerun that most helpful hint? Chris Harvey Go to the drugstore and buy a can citric acid. (It contains no harmful ingredients.) Fill the soap dispenser of the dishwasher with citric acid as you would with soap when doing a load of dishes. Run the washer through the complete cycle and the interior will be spotless.

Heloise's hints KING FEATURES An alternative to using citric acid is to use powdered fruit-flavored drink which contains citrus acid. It, too, does a good job of removing water spots, inside the dishwasher. Heloise Dear Heloise: I used to hate to make lunches in the early morning, but have found a quick method to get the job done in a hurry. I've been wondering why I didn't think of it sooner. On Saturdays, I bake a cake, brownies or cookies.

After they are cool, I cut them into pieces and wrap each piece with foil or plastic wrap. In the morning, all I need to do is make the sandwiches, put everything in individual lunch bags and the chore is finished. Happier Lunchmaker Dear Heloise: Save the Christmas catalog and give it to a new mother whose child was born in the same year. She, in turn, can surprise him with it on his 20th birthday. What a kick (and, probably a few laughs) he will get out of seeing what toys, clothes, etc.

were in vogue the year he was born. Mom will love remembering, to. Beth Germaine Dear Heloise: If you haven't completed your Christmas gift list or need a gift at the last minute, consider night lights. They are great safety aids all over the house. Not only are they useful in small children's rooms, but are especially helpful in elderly person's homes, many times preventing an injury.

Edie Barnes Dear Heloise: I have a great hint for us guys who change our car's oil sometimes. I cut the top off of old plastic gallon milk jugs. I then drain the used oil into these. It works great! You can just throw them away and nothing is wasted! Saves money and time, and no messy clean-up.
