Tia Ellis, left, and Michael Georgalas were named queen and king of the feast that seventh-graders at Chippewa Junior High School had during their recent study of the Middle Ages. courtesy of Chippewa Junior High School Students bring back medieval times Some students at a Des Plaines junior high school recently went back in time to advance their education. About 135 seventh-graders at Chippewa Junior High School took a break from their normal routine for an extended study of medieval times. During their study, students researched different aspects of the middle ages and then celebrated with a medieval fair and feast complete with cos- tumes. "I think they loved it," said history teacher Jim Sorensen.

"Any time you give them a break in the regular day and do something different (they enjoy it)." During the lesson, teachers used the different classes, such as math and science, to discuss an aspect of the era, Sorensen said. He adds that most of the students wanted to find out about the jousting, food and dancing. YMCA offers special canoe trips Children 12 years of age and older and their parents can spend some quality time together in an adventure-based setting by participating in YMCA Camp Duncan's Canoe Trip (July 13-17) and Canoe Trip (July 27-31). For each trip, participants will spend four nights and five days canoeing the remote National Scenic Pere Marquette River, a "gentle flowing" river ideal for the novice paddler. To take part, participants must be able to attend an orientation day on June 28.

The orientation includes canoe instruction, trip preparation and group building. Each trip is limited to 12 participants and staff. Trip fees include van transportation from Camp Duncan to the river, food and trip equipment. Participants provide their own sleeping bags, personal items and transportation to and from Camp Duncan. For more information, call YMCA Camp Duncan at (847) 546-8086.
