Monday through Friday. It I become disabled, would my children be eligible for Social Security benefits? Social Security disability benefits are paid not only to a disabled worker, but to his or her dependent children under age 18 or 19, if still in high school. Benefits for children disabled before age 22 may continue as long as they are disabled. You can find out what benefits you and your family could receive by calling Social Security's toll free number (800) 772-1213, and asking for a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement. This statement gives you estimates of the retirement, disability and survivors benefits you and your family would qualify for.

What percent of my salary goes towards Social Security taxes? In 1998, you and your employer each pay 7,65 percent of your gross salary, up to $68,400. If you are self-employed, you pay 15.3 percent of your taxable income into Social Security, up to $68,400. If you make more than $68,400 in 1998, you continue to pay the Medicare portion of the Social Security tax on the rest of your earnings. The medicare portion of the tax is 1.45 percent for employers and employees each, and 2.9 percent for self-employed people. I received a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement and one of my previous employers has not reported my wages to Social Security.

What should I do? Call Social Security and be prepared to show proof of your wages, such as your W-2 forms and income tax statements. Social Security will investigate.
